Finns still in the hunt for the Stanley Cup

Post by Ravvy » Fri May 12, 2006 8:39 pm

Anybody following the NHL playoffs? There are still some Finnish hockey players with an opportunity to get their name etched onto the Stanley Cup this year.

Teemu Selanne and the Anaheim Ducks just finished a 4-0 sweep of the Avs (who previously had given an early exit to a nice group of Finns on the Dallas Stars).

San Jose Sharks, with the Tampere duo of Vesa Toskala and Ville Nieminen, are up 2-1 on the Edmonton Oilers (Jussi Markkanen, back-up goalie).

Buffalo, with Toni Lydman and Teppo Numminen, are up 3-1 on Finn-less Ottawa. The remaining matchup of Carolina and New Jersey does not have a Finn in it.

Hyvaa Suomi! :D

I'm so disappointed that Kipprusoff and the Calgary Flames were eliminated! I'm cheering for Edmonton to win the Cup, but it's nice to see that so many Finns are still in the hunt!

Go Buffalo and Edmonton! :)

They played a very impressive game last night. :!:

Now that the Sharks are done, are Toskala and Nieminen going to jump on a plane and join the Finnish National team in time to help them vs. the Czechs?

Finn playing a key role

Post by sisu power » Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:05 am

After not playing since March, alternate back-up Markkanen is getting rid of the rust and keeping the Edmonton Oilers in the hunt for the cup. With the team down two games to none, there was a lot of pressure tonight and he came through with a great game.

Agreed. I'm rooting for Edmonton. Game 4 is huge, they need to win again at home.

Andrew Ladd of the Hurricanes apparently comes from the town where I live, but it's definitely Edmonton that is getting my cheers. Looking forward to game 4!

Plenty of room for both tournaments. They don't compete for ice time!

Talent can get a team to come out on top of league play, but the grueling grind it takes to become the SC champions requires more than skill and finesse - it requires physical toughness that a shorter tournament would not. It's an extremely difficult honour to achieve, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
