Interesting I was just going to ask meenfreem about that. Initial reports in Britain were saying it was the NAC Breda & Newcastle fans who were involved but it later turned out it was Chelsea Feyenoord and a bit of organised hooly stuff.

I reckon the more money Chelsea spend and the better they get. The longer they're going to stay in the European competitions. This could be trouble for English clubs as Chelsea on euro aways is bad news. With the prospect of Euro 2004 in Portugal next year, English clubs could be looking at lengthy bans from competing in Europe again.

Lets see how many Chelsea knuckleheads turn up for the Rangers United game next wednesday

There was a bit of trouble at the Lokeren - Man City game on wednesday too. Thankfully it didn't seem to get too serious according to the reports.

I'm going to the new city stadium tomorrow for the first time. I've no idea about parking etc. Maybe it's best to walk it from piccadilly? Do you have any tips Olly?

Guy finds a bottle on the beach, rubs it out pops a genie.
"Forget all that crap about three wishes," Said the genie, "I only grant one wish. What's it to be?"
The guy brought out a map and showed it to the genie pointing out the Middle East.
"OK, I want peace in the Middle East, no more fighting between Israel and Palestine, because I think this will bring about world peace." He said.
"Hold on," Said the genie, "I've been in that bottle for five hundred years and I'm a bit rusty, they've been at it for thousands of years. That's a big ask, give me an easier one to start with."
"Well can you make Chelsea win the Premiership?" He asked.
"Gimme another look at that map will you!"

Lots of car crime round there, Although chances are it would be alright (unless it a Subaru WRX or something  ). Parking could be a problem. Its a long walk from piccadilly though, I'd recommend getting a bus from piccadilly. I'll try and track down the bus number for you mate...

.....OK its the 216 you want IIRC. I think it goes from outside the Wetherspoons in Picadilly (or near there).

Now that the "Big match" is behind and Engaland can already book its tickects to Portugal, what are your expectations for the Euro? Do you think that England is a favorite to get to the semi-final's/ win?

is anyone planning to travel to Europe's west coast an d see the tournament? There's an add going around: "In Portugal, the extra time is always the best part of the game." Time Magazine knows better..

I'd love to, its unlikely I will though. How do the Portugese feel about the possibility of hooligans at the tournament?

not very well, I'am afraid. there are already reports on the press that 50 000 england supports will come, among them some hundreds of hooligans. Today the british embassy was briefing portuguese police and authorities involved on this matter. They'll close the borders during the Euro butthey know it won't prevent most of the troublemakers from coming.

Anyway, there'll be also hooligans from other countries as well, like Holland and germany.. Remenber France 2000 :(

Yep imagine if Wales, Scotland or Turkey get through the playoffs and have to play England. Portugal's a popular holiday destination for English in the summer anyway, there will be loads of fans there.

I would imagine that UEFA would move heaven and earth to make sure the England group games are NOT played in Faro. The Algarve has suffered enough.

Doesn't Portugal have any old vestiges of empire left - no, I guess not. Ah well, there's still the Azores and Madeira. Perhaps Ponta Delgada Wanderers have a ground with lights.

Not since 97 when Macao was returned to China. The archipelagos are located too far from mainland and to be honest I would be very disappointed to see the lovely islands of Azores subject to mass turism.

take a look at the cities where teh euro will take place. can you guess what's the pattern?

Errrr... No. Please enlighten me. And please DO tell me they wouldn't be stupid enough to put the Brits in Faro...

Perhaps that was too much to ask from an outsider. All of the host cities are along the sea coast or close to and all but Faro are located between Braga and Setúbal (about 50 km south of Lisbon): those are the most developed areas, where there's plenty of (public) investment, better quality of life and better paid jobs. The rest of the country, the interior, is ignored. Poor and deemed to be poorer. Notice that the "interior" comprises also some seashore areas (north of Braga, the area between setubal and algarve and Azores).

Back to the subject of this thread, answering your question:
Can they choose the location for a specific team?I haven't heard of it before, only hosts were given that privilege (japan and Korea).
If it was up to me I'd send Spain to Azores

I have no idea, but I do recall that England wound up in Cagliari in Italy 1990, and I don't think it was an accident... I was there for the opening rounds, saw games in Bologna, Udine, Verona, Milan San Siro, Turin...

Yes, I see your point re the map. Personal view is that The Algarve is only fit for human habitation west of Lagos these days anyway... Salema/Figuera is still nice, but for how much longer now that the motorway reaches up to Bensafrim?
