Oulu in August: advice

Post by liliana_pt » Mon Jul 10, 2006 1:07 am

Hi everyone!

I'll be in Oulu for the whole month of August and I'd really like if you could give some hints like: where to go, what to see...
How is life in Oulu? Pretty hectic or peaceful?

I'll be doing a clinical clerksip in the General Surgery clinic at the University hospital...any med students from there?

Any information will be welcome:)
Tks a lot 8)

Depends on your mileage...someone from Ii might describe Oulu as "hectic"

Ok, Oulu is a pretty quiet place. When are you arriving? If you want to swim there is nallikari beach, if you like science...well you could go to tietomaa science museum, there is the art museum - small and free on fridays, the botanic gardens - behind the university, If you want to travel just a little there is ranua zoo not too far away...hmmm thats all that comes to my head right now...

Hope this helps

I visited Oulu this January. It is the Promised Land of pizza places and Chinese restaurants. :) (One of the Chinese places had 'grillattua banaalia' for dessert  )
There was one nice café in Rotuaari, I just do not remember the name. :? It was open very late at night, nice cakes etc. Usually Finnish café's have the disadvantage to be closed very early.

The cafes name is bisketti...and its quite expensive...but then again so is finland. And pizza places...well they are about as plentiful as pubs in Ireland...

There are quite a few festivals/concerts and other happenings during summer in Oulu. And night clubs too if you are into them. At least I do not find it too quiet. I'd expect you to survive here a whole month  and not get too bored.

To keep you busy: http://www.rotuaari.info/

BTW: Bisketti is NOT an expensive cafe in Finnish standards - and that's also maybe the reason why it is usually busy. Actually it's much cheaper than the cafe of the second oldest bakery in Finland (Katri Antell) located just on the other side of the street.

I think so, too. They had those huge pieces of chocolate cake, and hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream, and compared to prices in Tampere, I think it was very reasonable priced.
