...could anybody give a brief overview (or pointer to english language website) that explains the financial and other rights shared between couples who are a) co-habiting and b) married? What are the differences?

I'm especially interested in the situation regarding shared ownership of property (housing) and child custody.

Probably a big question, but...

Well, basically co-habiting has no special rights beyond the common ones. So like house ownership would be dealt according with private contracts act. Marriage is specifically for this reason, to give a different set of rules. Child custody then again doesn't depend on being married, rather than who is marked as the parent/s. Theres some brochures here
