martial arts in Helsinki?

Post by interleukin » Tue May 09, 2006 12:47 pm

Hi everyone!

I wonder if you know of martial arts clubs in Helsinki (aikido or some other budo)? Any clubs where I would be able to get instruction in Swedish/English? Simple one-word sentences should be enough, the most important thing is that the trainer does not see this as an irritating thing, to have to teach a non-Finnish speaker.

I know it is a lot to ask for, but aikido is highly addictive so I guess it is worth a try. :=)

Sweden has a national "budo-organisation" with links to all member clubs, is there something similar in Finland?

best regards,
eeinarsdottir

Well, if some Finn threatens you by saying "Anteeksi neiti, mutta mahtaisitteko osata neuvoa minulle tien rautatieasemalle?" - then it's time for a few Karate chops and roundhouse kicks...

... and remember to say KIAIIIIIIItos

Thanks for the links everyone.

I usually find that my Icelandic viking woman attitude (I know it is a cliché, but it is often useful), combined with some kiaii!!!! and nikkyo (a very un-nice twist of the wrist) usually helps out in any situation.

The best things about being a woman and doing martial arts is that you get better at defining who is seriously threatening to you and who is not, plus you are not afraid (except for those very rare situations when you really ARE in deep !"#¤%). :=)

Sounds like I will get a chance to get the gi and hakama out of the closet once more. Nice.

Hi!
If interested in not-just-Finnish instrucitons (or at least understanding behaviour), you can try our Shotokai karate club: http://karate.tky.fi/english.html

As you can see from description, it's very rich with different kind of practices (boxing, karate, wrestling, kind of aikido.. etc.).

Welcome-tervetuloa! :)
