Moving stuff (but not furniture) from UK -> Finland

Post by Meri-Tuuli » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:36 pm

Okay okay I know this subject has been done to death, but try searching the archives and there isn't a sensible conclusion.

Anyway so does anyone know a good company etc to move basically what amounts to a few bits and bobs maybe totally a couple of suitcases to Finland from the UK??

Or have any helpful hints etc?

Thanks

Meri-Tuuli

Well, there are cargo services at the airports just for such cases. They cost an arm and a leg but less of an arm than overweight.

Hey Hank

Yeah I tried (albeit ages ago) looking into moving stuff with Finnair Cargo (or whatever it was called) and the website was confusing and abit weird.

Anyway, well I just rang up 'excess-baggage.com' and they reckon for a box 41cm x 61cm x 51cm it'll cost £159 including door to door pick up/drop off and pick up and drop off of the box itself and assiciated packing materials. They seem very helpful, professional, fully bonded etc. Insurance is extra, at 5% of the total value of the goods. Delieverly (I can't spell that today for some reason!) is within 2-4 weeks.

Sooooo..... dunno. A actual plane ticket would cost about the same as that!!!

Hey I wonder if you can buy two plane tickets, obviously using only one seat, but then have the extra allowance added onto yours??

Hmmm.

Well, ask the airline the overweight charges...

I'm moving over in a few months and will be using excess baggage, they give an automatic 30% discount for your first enquiry/quote. I'm moving about 30 boxes and have been quoted £550 door to door.

I recently managed to get a 20kg bag through as hand luggage flying Blue1, London Stansted-Helsinki. The bag was one of those neat little trolley jobbies and because it looked the part I wasn't asked about its weight at check-in. So if you can put lots of small, heavy items into your hand luggage (I had PC components, laptop & books in mine) then you might not need to ship it if you can take the stuff with you in person.

Hey sfx,

That was my plan, get all the books etc into hand baggage, but don't think that looks likely now, with the strict rules they've got going on carrying things into the cabin. Well, I'll be taking my laptop as hand luggage anyway.

I'm already going to be wearing my winter coat, and hiking boots on the plane!

Anyone know how much is charged if you go over the weight limit????

I'm traveling with SAS.
