Is there any chance for a photographer (with very good IT skills) to find a job in Helsinki?

I don't know about Helsinki, but in the countryside photos are not so important. In most cases people have a picture of their house on the wall and a few pictures of their children on the tv top. That's all.

Often a journalist of the local newspapers gets a camera to take pictures, even if he or she has never done it before. And that shows in the quality :? .

It might be best to start your own business and try to get some customers and offer to work as a freelancer.

Lehtikuva is Finland's leading picture agency. They "produce and distribute visual content to newspapers, magazines, other media, advertising agencies and corporations."

However, the last time they hired a permanent photog was a couple years ago, and it made news because it was the first hire in like, 10 years or something.

I don't know how ad agencies handle photography, whether they have in-house staff or use certain companies on a regular basis.

There is one ad agency in Finland that tries to create an "international" atmosphere... http://www.bobhelsinki.com, but perusing their staff list, all the names are Finnish.

The problem is your IT skills might be more marketable than your photography skills, unfortunately.

It can be a very difficult market to crack, my Norweigan friend who, at least in my opinion, is a very good photographer, ended up returning home to Norway after a year of fruitless searching, and he was really trying. He visited every magazine he could, every picture agency, newspaper, etc had his portfolio everywhere including on his own website.

It's often not what you know, it's who you know
