Help needed! I am not familiar with the legislation when it comes to immigrants. Could anyone give any useful advice, please?!
We have a visitor from a non-Eu country, staying in Finland with a 3 month´s visa. Is it possible to get a work permit and extend his visa, or even get a residence permit, if he finds himself a job here? Getting a job for a person like that is already a problem, of course, but is it even worth trying?

I am a non eu citizen and I have been to Finland many times, for months at a time. Right now I am starting to find out the process of moving there. I wrote the Finnish Embasy here in Canada asking about work and resident permits. Unfortunately their reply stated that non eu citizens must apply for their first work permit outside of Finland. If your guest has had a work permit before he can go to the local police station and apply for one, if not I am not sure what to tell you. If you check out the topic Moving to Finland Willy Nilly were kind of talking about that now.
One thing I will say is that Canadians don't need a visa to visit Finland in most cases so if your friend has a visa, the rules might be different, anyone want to take it from here?
cheers

Very probably the answer is no. However, it depends on the precise details of the case and on the strength of the applicant's connection to Finland (which is not always obvious at first sight). The key question is: why does this applicant want to live in Finland and not, for example, in Sweden, Somalia or Singapore?
We have discussed cases of this kind in the "stupid uvi decision" and "willy nilly" threads. I have also had to clean out my private messages mailbox twice in the last month because of exchanges of details concerning cases of this kind.
More case details please, either here or privaatisti,
