How much money do you need?
Greetings all!
My question is that my mate from the UK waits to stay in Finland and he lives with his girlfriend! He went to the police station and they told him that he does not have enough money to stay. How much money do you need in your account so that they will allow you to stay? He really likes it here and he wants to take a Finnish language course but they wont let him cause he does not have SSN. Cant get that unless the police approve of him staying here (here as in OULU)
Thank you very much for all your help in advance

OK, so now I hope people start to believe me when I say it isn't all that easy. My brummy mate got cold-sholdered the same way.
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the gf having a job or not, but one needs to prove they won't be a "burden to the state" and have "sufficient funds". Now what is "sufficient funds" I don't know. The only thumb rule I could guesstimate is the amount of money they require from foreign students who want a residence permit.

Thanks Hank for your reply!....That is the whole point of the matter!...he wants to stay here but how can he prove that!...He is trying to get to a Finnish course but they wont let him in unless he has a SSN!...He is slowly getting pissed off and it is hurting the relationship!...Just dont know!...Even a fixed permit is good for the time being but he cant get that either!....Has no job and cant get into a course!...He does not want to take advantage of the system or anything like that but it would be nice to know how much is enough!....I guess the best bet is to ask the unemployment office and see if they could help!
Anyways thanks again
Anyways thanks again
I have been trying to find the figure that Hank mentioned that they ask that foreigh student must have.
The figure of 4000 € comes to mind ..butI cant find the evidence that is correct.
This is an odd one and I suspect that it is local or even individual official policy, because the bottom line is as an EU citizen one is free to travel and reside anywhere in the EU.
Tell him to visit the local Kela ..take his passport and GF (they might not speak English in Oulu).
Say "I want to join a Finnish course and need a SSN!"
See what they say..

sinikettu: Thank you very much for your help!....I will ask him to go there with his girlfriend....but I am sure that they have already done that and they probably sent him to the police office first!....You see about the EU thing is that, yes you can move around anywhere in europe and yes you are free to work anywhere but you can not get any benefits that some people get!....It is really strange but in some way makes sense cause if you get SSN card and you go to school then you can apply for "opintotuki" student funds!....See that is where the problem lays!...They dont want to just give that to any Tom, Dick or Harry off the streets.....I was thinking that it would be about 4000 but I am not sure myself!....Well if that is the case then he can just ask his parents to wire that over get the SSN and then send the money back!...But that might also cause some problems!...Wierd how hard it is just to attend school!...Finding a job well that is another story and another topic all in itself!
Thanks again
Thanks again
Regarding non-EU students, this is what http://www.uvi.fi tells us - "Students must be able to prove that they have at their disposal at least 500 euros a month or 6000 euros for a year." - but for EU citizens, the site is quite vague and only says "must have sufficient funds"...sinikettu wrote:I have been trying to find the figure that Hank mentioned that they ask that foreigh student must have.

Hank.
Like I said in the beginning that he cant get into school without a SSN...cant get to work cause he does not know the language!...And the best thing I have ever heard is that you need a degree nowadays to be a cleaner so there goes that option!....Everything here is like a double edge sword!...Can't get to work cause you got no experience cant get experience cause you cant get work. Cant go to school without a SSN and you cant get a SSN if you are not in school!...Funny how things work out!....Fraustrating for others
