Fans of this legendary series have had to wait a long time, but now the Moomins are back, in their original 1980s puppet incarnation. Mysterious woodland folk, Hemulens, Hattifatteners, the terrible Groke and of course the captivating Moomin family, they are all here in this dazzingly enchanting and magical series. Relive the magic of the Moomins, as fresh and spellbinding as they were when we first saw them 20 years ago.
This isn't the über popular animated one, apparently.

Nope - it's most probably this German (I thought it might have been Czech or Polish?) one... I only remember this vaguely...

Isn't the Japanese "anime"-style series available on DVD? Not on Play.com at least, apparently. That's surprising... given how popular it was (and still is) I'm sure I've seen at least Finnish-language versions but I suppose you're looking for an English one... If you're interested you might ask e.g. Filmifriikki in Helsinki... they should be able to tell you if it's available at all

Mind you, I was unaware of this until now:

"A Japanese animated cartoon was produced in 1972, but Jansson was so upset by the liberties taken with the original material in the first twenty-six episodes (including the addition of guns, booze and swearing!) that she wouldn‘t allow them to be licensed for overseas sales; however the remaining episodes were much closer to the original and were approved for sale."

Well, don't they take some magic mushrooms in the wizards hat?

Q: Why are the Moomins so fat?
A: They eat and party all the time...
... and Tove forgot to draw them a butthole.
Cheers, Hank W.

This is really interesting to know. I was desperately searching for the English version of the series this past summer and ended up buying some bootleg versions from Ebay UK. The quality was okay, but I'm not one for supporting bootleg copies. I didn't realize it would be bootleg until it arrived in the mail. I was disappointed, but figured it was the only thing available out there so I decided to just live with it.

Try spanking it.

Only kidding. It was too irresistable.

I went through most of the ordering process, but didn't actually make the purchase. At what point did you have a problem?

I ordered one of the individual Moomin DVDs from play.com a couple of months ago. No problems ordering in € and having it delivered to my address here.

I was surprised to find I prefer the animated version. Never saw them as a child in the UK, my first experience was with the cartoons on VHS here. The puppets aren't so bad, but hearing it in English (and a very posh English accent at that) just seems... well it seems wrong :) Couldn't even recognise the names of half of the characters...

Buy it from the price-in-euros side, not the price-in pounds. Apparently they figured out that quitting screwing on the exchange rate causes less hassle.
