hi, i'm 23 years old looking for a job in helsinki, from babysitting to restaurants and bars.
i've several years of experience in bth fields, i speak italian, french and english, finnish basic.

It's impossible to find a job in restaurants and hotels only with english. Finland it's a hard country so if you realy want to start working somewhere please start with the newspapers or cleaning until you learn finnish.

If you realy want to work in a restaurant you can try to work in an arabian pizzeria but I don't think you will like that

Thank you very much for the information.I realise a bit in this 4 weeks how hard is Finland.I came here becouse i hear that Finland and Sweeden need romanian and bulgarian workers,and after 1 jan 2007 will be no restrictions concern working in Finland.even the consul of Finland Embassy in Bucharest,confirm this.i don.t now what to do,i spend a lot of money here,with the app,furniture,etc,and i.m not the only one.Romanian and bulgarians gone came here to try to work,after the advertising in our countrys.Finnish language is very difficult,take time,but any way thank you again for your help. i hope to find something to some cleaning companys,and to learn finnish language.I.m happy in Finland even is gone start to be very hard for me.

Not a lot of romanians and bulgarians are going to come in the nordic coutries, especilly in Finland because although they want work force from Romania and Bulgaria they have nothing to offer them. Even finns have problems finding a job, so the conclusion is that Finland is not going to be a target for the next years.
If you want to work, go to Spain or any other countries.
I am in Finland from 2004 and it took me 1 year to find a job, so it's hard.

There is "work" and there is "work". For example they are all the time looking for workers in building ships. People doing hotel work there is enough Finnish people who speak German And English, and Finnish and Swedish and maybe a few other languages on top trying to find work. Customer service generally the first requirement is Finnish. So for almost any kind of entry-level job you need to speak Finnish. This is not a boom economy like in Ireland where you have to go to the shop and start "excuse me, do you speak English".

If you look at the EURES site you see what kind of jobs there are available in Finland toward EU.
Which site you should have looked before you came... yes, the ads are in funny languages. That might give some idea what the "need" is. Currently they are looking for English, German, Italian, Spanish, French - speaking hotel and restaurant staff in Lapland. So that would be your chance. After you get the first job then getting the second is easier.

BTW if I was in the situation, I'd already be applying here. Its a real hard job, but then again you get experience and the money is good. Not to mention sun and palm trees

Just got a job at a hotel and I have very little finnish (only what i've picked up over the past 3 months no lessons) and no hotel exp.

For George and everyone out there, just keep trying!

First,thank you for all the answers and to all of you regarding informatotions.i want to ask about Lappland,if i found a job,they provide accomodation? i can.t pay another app,becuse i have the contract in Helsinki,signed for one year,and montly i pay 555 euro.to go inside i pay 1100 euro exept the first months.So,i have like 15 years experiance,in hotels and restaurants buisness,secial on cruise ships,like Sanitatin Superviser,Ass Food Manager,Ass Housekeeping Manager,Rest Manager and Waiter.I.m looking for a job not direct with the client,until i learn the language.And about Spain is more difficult,i was this year 4 months in Tenerife,and without working permit is very imposible,and with work permit 700,800 euro/month.in south Tenerife,the same small app like what i have here is 550 to 650 euro /month.They don.t have any managment,and they ask you about work permit,but nobody take you with contract.Finland is a very structural,i don.t now the word,sorry,and for new emigrants is more better then many countrys in Europe.And Finland ask about emigrants,i don.t now what to say

another place (also downtown), don't remember the name of the place, but it's anyway very close to Elixia Alexium / Stockman (well, it's quite hard to spot it

there are 2 restaurants in a small interior garden. one of the restaurants used to have (also) an... Romanian waiter

you can go and pester them for a while (or you can start knocking at every restaurant door, maybe it would work... eventually)

(lately the news broke that police and tax officials are paying their respects to pubs/bars/restaurants in order to spot the illegal practices = workers without contract, etc)
