ER: digital cameras come in three varieties:
1) Compact point and shoot (least expensive and smallest - and most popular)
2) Prosumer (not compact, some manual photography options but mostly auto everything, better pictures and images than your regular compact point and shoot - especially indoors, more expensive)
3) dSLR (you have to buy lenses separately, full sized camera, very expensive and cumbersome, but it gives you the best pictures)
It is likely you have the first one - a compact point and shoot.
