Interior Ministry wanting to handle all refugee issues.

Post by network_engineer » Fri Dec 15, 2006 7:19 am

Hi all,

I am sure that this has been discussed in the past but here goes:

The whole discussion about the refugees and the quota seems to be
taking a different dimension now with the Ministry of the Interior
wanting to handle immigration [refugees] affairs?

I wonder where this is finally going to go? Any ideas?

With the current setup, I can imagine some scary and annoying thoughts.

PS: In an ideal world, the Parliament ought to be made aware of the difficult current scene [with all the details] of the average immigrant with regard to the immigration authorities.

Refuges are a special category of immigrants.
They are "selected" by a part/divison of the UN.
Finland is not alone in allocating to the Min of Interior the responsiblity of selecting which of those listed by the UN are most suitable for our country.
In all EU countries the selection responsibilty is with the Ministry of Interior.
Kari Rajamäki did not ask for the task he was given it by the Eduskuntatalo and the EU.
I am sure he and his ministry would prefer just to administer police and emergency service.

However, if another ministry needs resource, e.g Min of Labour, and thinks that the selection process needs a kick to increase processing speed.
That is what happens.
e.g.Tarja Filatov has "persuaded" Kari Rajamäki to move his arse into a higher gear and speed up the work of his department.

Can that really be the case even in Sweden and the Netherlands, where there are separate immigration ministries?

I thought they were sub division of the Interior Ministry where the minister was a junior minister reporting/managed by the Home Office....but..Not sure you might well be right that they report direct to the PM:
Why not have a separate immigration ministry in Finland?
It seems like a good idea that a minister has only this responsiblity and not also police emergency services etc.

Where in Sweden?

* Prime Minister's Office
* Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries
* Ministry of Defence
* Ministry of Education, Research and Culture
* Ministry of Finance
* Ministry for Foreign Affairs
* Ministry of Health and Social Affairs
* Ministry of Industry Employment and Communications
* Ministry of Justice
* Ministry of Sustainable Development
* Office for Administrative Affairs
* Permanent Representation of Sweden to the EU

BTW, Sweden does not have a "Ministry of the Interior" but the "ministry of Justice" has a bit of a different mandate than that of Finland:
The Ministry of Justice is responsible for matters relating to the police authorities, judiciary system, prisons service, sport, popular movements and democracy.

There is a "Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy"
Tobias Billström
Ministry of Justice

and there is a "Minister for Integration and Gender Equality"
Nyamko Sabuni
Ministry of Justice

So, yes but no. Looks like a "Ministry of the Interior" in Sweden to me (same handling the police). And then theres the local UVI, the Migrationsverket.

I'm too arsed to read through Dutch, do your own research ;)
Cheers, Hank W.
