car registration needed for PhD student?

Hi,

I am post-gradual (PhD) student of Helsinki University, most likely for next 2 years.
Would anyone know, if I have to register my car for using it in Finland?
Or if I can use it as a student, when traveling abroad 2 - 3 times a year?
