USA to Finland

Post by MBVarkestra » Mon Jan 29, 2007 1:19 am

i was born and lived 15 years of my life in north eastern Mexico but moved to America and my mother is american so i obtained the citizenship quite easily as i spoke english fairly well i'd say.So i have an american passport and all that groovy stuff and my girlfriend is 1/2 estonian,1/2 finnish.

We are going to live in Berlin from july to august with one of her girlfriends and after that she wants me to really consider moving in with her to her flat in Helsinki,i know it sounds all nice and that but i know there are big obstacles for me,i don't speak a word of finnish,i want to eventually finish school and get a diploma,i want to work and all that.

so yeah i suppose im asking for advice or opinions,it can be constructive criticism or just a pat on the back,we are both 21 year olds.Personally i like it here but i've always been fond of experiencing new things and i'm absolutely excited about this offer she kindly proposed to me but im also quite unsure of how things could turn out to be.

is there a considerable population of latins living in helsinki? or it is very minimal?

Well, "her wanting" is not enough for the officials to grant a residence permit so there is your first thing to consider. See now after you spend your 3 months in the EU in Germany its "adios" for you on the tourist visa for another 6 months. And after your passport is in the EU computer once you get caught on "overtime" its not necessarily guantanamo-style, but repatriation with ban to enter. So it might be worth then looking for some options like applying for a study place and so forth say like http://www.admissions.fi Because yes you can of course move in her flat and sit there and she will of course feed you. Like your prospective life as a dog? Because you cannot get even a bus pass if you are without a permit. And forget about getting a job not speaking Finnish. This is how EU-citizens "find it easy"so you are a non-EU on top of that.

"Considerabe population" you mean all 100?

There are 75 Mexican men and 44 Mexican women living in Uusimaa as of 2005. In the whole of mainland Finland there are 108 Mexican men and 81 Mexican women.

For the other countries in Central American you can find it here:

Hola!

Hello!!

Our situation is kind of similar than yours so i want to tell you this. I´m finn and my husband is mexican, we lived in usa for 2,5years, but he is not citizen so the life was kind of hard (with insurance, work etc.) even there is bunch of illegal mexicans, i did not want to stay over there for ever, in first place i had my aupair-visa for 13months, then i went back with tourist visa and stayed 1,5year more. We planned to move to mexico, but after six months in mexico i was ready to settle down in finland.. We just moved month ago to our own apartment in vantaa, almost border of helsinki. I am looking for a job and my husband is studying now finnish and getting about 630euros per month and he just applied to go to school in fall, degree programme in international business, they have several courses, depends what u r interested. http://www.admissions.fi

So about your case, how long have you dated? she can apply residence permit for you if you have dated for at least 2years. If you are married it is easier and i think faster, but i understand u both are young. She is finnish citizen right? if she lives here? if i was u i wouldn´t move to estonia, it is smaller country than finland and less foreigners. My husband has one year residency afer that we just have to re-new it.

Good luck and if u have questions i am happy to answer!

-life is full of choices it is up to you what u choose-

well, i think all that depends of you. If u really wanna work there is always work it doesn´t matter where u are... I think that is better option than studying finnish for years and then trying to study some career.. like labour market is suggesting.. plus u can use your language skills, my friend studied that and i know enough about it, now we r in finland but who knows where we are in future.. good luck for u! have u studied that or why u saying that? did get a job after that?

as an assanvessankassa, yes, like any gringo...

Fact of life is you love him and think he is the best thing after sliced bread that was invented, but for the employer he is just another non-Finnish speaker, line on the left, one cross each... it is not me or you he has to impress, its the prospective employer, and theres 1001 "international business" graduates from Nowheremäki competing with 1002 "kansainvälinen markkinointi" students who have no chance for finding a job - and the "internationals" even less as the "language skills" is puhutko suomea, kyllä/ei
