English kids want to meet Finland junior hockey team

Post by probe200 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 9:27 pm

I am planning to visit Finland in February. My children play ice hockey and I wanted to make contact with a junior hockey club in the Helsinki/Espoo area.

I would like to find out what junior tournaments are on during that period, either to have our club take part, or if not, maybe build contacts for the future. Maybe my boys could meet and train with some finnish kids.

Does anyone have web addresses for local junior ice rinks in the area so I can make contact. I can't speak finnish so the finnish websites are a problem for me.

I think you want the teams as if you call the ice rink you'll get my nephew who says "ööö - I working here" ;)

My son played for a 96 Jäähonka team for several years but we made him chose between ice hockey and soccer this year as all the practice was getting to be too much. He chose soccer.

Jäähonka (based in Espoo) has a webpage in English and I'm SURE you could send them an email in English and they would be happy to oblige. I vaguely remember one of the (important) people at the British Embassy has a son who plays (or played) in a Jäähonka team in Espoonlahti, he would also be aged about 10 yrs old. When I used to stand for hours watching practice and games there were always people around willing to natter in English. In Espoo/Helsinki language isn't really a problem.

Good luck, great idea!

My son is playing for EVU97 (OK its in Vantaa, but that is sort of Helsinki/Espoo area) and the ice halls are in Myyrmaki... if interested please send me a PM and I can arrange a few practise sessions for you. He has at least two practices per week. You might need to sign up the boys, some insurance is required and included in this small fee.
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Hi there and thanks for all the replies. It's only now this week that we definitely know that we can come across. I've just started a new job which put the trip in doubt and the BA aircrew strike a few weeks ago also didn't help.

We will now only be across a few days so now the boys won't be bringing their full hockey kit across so a spell of joint training won't be possible, and I've left it too late to set things up by now.

I've had a look at the links on the websites so thanks for that. Hockey wise we'll be attending the Blues - Jokerit game on Saturday and maybe drop in on one of the Jahoonka trainging sessions to watch and observe.

regards

Bring your skates if you can. All the school playing fields are iced over in winter and anyone can play on them for free, and most of them are floodlit. We have a school next door to our house and my kids go and skate on the ce almost every day!

Have a great trip. And don't forget to cheer for the Blues

I live in Espoo not far from the Länsiauto Arena (Blues home) so if you have any questions feel free to PM me.
