Moving to Finland with a Finnish student...

Post by vimak » Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:00 pm

Hi,

We (me + my Finnish BF) are hoping to move to Finland. We have been both working in Germany, and he would start studying in university next fall. Is it possible for me to get any kind of benefits to get us started in our new life in Finland? I don't speak any more Finnish than the basic kiitos and moi...

We're both 22 and I don't have any vocational education either, does that prevent me from getting some kind of unemployment benefit? We are engaged.

Thanks for any tips

OK I don't want this to offend you but,

First question is have you used the search link on FF and read answers of benefits of EU citizens, looking for work, training, Kela, engaged.

Have you checked with your own government what benefits you can get, ie health, social security etc..

What about your BF has he called and contacted the Finnish consulate, you are his significant other what has he done to help you prepare to move to Finland

Your question is too huge to answer in a paragraph, it would be easier to see what you already know and clarify the incorrect points or blank areas.

The situation is that if you Quit your job you might not be able to draw any benefit/Social security..
In Finland if one quits..is not made redundant..you cannot get any social security for 3 months..You need to check in Germany if that is situation there also.
If you are made redundant then again, German Social Security will tell you what you can get in another EU country..e.g Finland.

Either way your BF has to start to think how he is going to fund the pair of you here while he is at university.
Social Security ...not enough.

Ok we did some digging on the matter :) If everything goes as planned, he will get student benefit, and I'll get unemployment benefit. We were told that as we live together there should be no problem for me to get the benefits too. And time I worked in Germany can be counted towards to probation period.
That would leave us with little over thousand euros a month... quite a drop from what we're used to when working, but I guess people can survive with that :)
