Pulla + calories
I don't suppose anyone knows how many calories are in your average pulla - actually does anyone know of any (obviously Finnish) websites that list this sort of info?
I've gained a couple of kilos over the winter.......
Thanks.

"Pikkupulla ilman täytteitä sisältää energiaa n. 150 kcal ja 4 g rasvaa. Voitaikinapohjaisissa viinereissä on vastaavasti kaloreita n. 300 kcal ja rasvaa 17 g."
Pulla is lightfood. One has about 150 calories and only 4 grams of fat. So called Wiener-leipä type buns have double calories and 4 times more fat.

Not sure, but if you think one small biscuit has around 60-90, then I guess you're looking at a coupla hundred. Perhaps you could look on a bag of pulla next time you're in S-Market.
I read an interesting article on the subject on the BBC recently, not sure if you saw it, in case you or anyone is interested I'll get it, erm hang on,
ok here's the link:

So, next time you go to blame your metabolism for your weight, remember the cold hard truth - thin people eat less.

Take your pick from Fineli's list:

The way my MIL used to make them, they probably outdo danish

Re: Pulla + calories
Would anyone know the best way to make Pulla in the UK?
I tried to make it and it was awful, it looked like pulla but believe me it didn't smell like pulla
and it was rock hard. I had to throw it away because it was inedible.
I think perhaps it was the yeast, would anyone be able to suggest the best yeast to buy in the UK to make it with?

Pulla is Finland's best kept secret, absolutely delicious!magenta22 wrote:Would anyone know the best way to make Pulla in the UK?
I do not know how to make pulla, but here is a recipe that I found online: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Finnish-Pulla/Detail.aspx
That recipe looks reasonably close to the pulla my MIL makes.

I
Maybe you messed up with the recipe. I'd say you could make pulla anywhere in the world provided you can get some plain flour, yeast and cardamom. The lightest pulla is a well proofed one. Not that I'm a pulla making expert just yet but I've been taking pulla making lessons and it seems that the trick is in fresh ingredients and good techniquemagenta22 wrote:Would anyone know the best way to make Pulla in the UK?

I think so too, I think perhaps the recipe I was following gave me the wrong amount of yeast needed (think it was something like 8g which was a whole pot!) of course having not made it before I didn't think anything of it as it was in line with all the other ingredients proportions.
I've since got a cookbook of Finnish recipes so I will have to try it again

What do you mean "whole pot"? The matchbox-sized lump of fresh hiiva you get from the store here weighs 50g... 8g is like one match thin slice off it if even that. One A4 of 80g/m2 copy paper weighs 5g so 8g is two papers... with dry yeast its even less as its more potent, like a teaspoonful into the warm milk so you get it "going"...

Re: Pulla + calories
Maybe it was brewers yeast. Now that WOULD taste real bad

In the shop I went to it was a 'whole pot' I even measured it. It wasn't a large nescafe sized tinPursuivant wrote:What do you mean "whole pot"? It was active dry yeast cloudberry, well that's what it said on the tin!
