We put a small amount of vaseline on Sophie's face before she goes outsdide- seems to work.
Cant solve the problem of the inherited bad circulation- we still cant keep her hands and feet warm even at only minus 5.

Babies and Cold Weather

Post by Wheely » Wed Feb 07, 2007 9:14 pm

Hi,

no this was not the case of healthy red cheeks as the color was very dark red and it was a "reaction" more than getting this nice outdoors looks - kind of an "allergic" look. I remember my dad saying that dark red comes before white which is why I got concerned. Of course I cannot be absolutely sure but there was nothing else to cause it and it was exactly in the areas where her face was exposed.

But lets see if she actually will get more used to the weather gradually and I will stop washing her cheeks to keep the good oils on the skin in the mornings during these cold days.

Marianne

PS. For circulation I have found that some sauna treatment helps. Even if Sophie cannot have a real sauna yet then some alteration with warmer and colder (for example water) at times as well as layered woollens usually does the trick. We use a massage oil from Singapore (meant for babies) that is wonderful for circulation but I wonder if there is anything similar here ...

Sophie quite enjoys sauna- will maybe try that a bit more for her.
When we are out playing she wears wool gloves with either Reima, thinsulate or some other Finnish brand gloves. I cant put anything else on her as she cant move her hands then! One must be able to make snow castles!
Feet wise she has some Goretex boots with sheepkin liners, 2 pairs of wool socks and her tights. Cant cram any more into the boots.
I will keep trying different combinations.

It's nice to see common sense rules over insane hysteria in some parts of the world still.

I like the touch about not using lotion to help the skin, funny story about my grandad, he had horribly dry hair all his life because as a kid he used to oil it up (was apparently fashionable in the early 1900s), brill cream or whatever.

Basically his hair follicles stopped producing oils because his hair was already oily enough. People often forget that long term treatments will often make a simple problem much worse :)
