Do I have to get a prescription from the doctor to buy birth control pills at the pharmacy?

I've brought some already, but next year I'll have to buy more. Back in Indo, I could buy birth control pills freely without any prescription in any pharmacy.

Second question: I MAY repeat the prescription without having to consult the doctor again, right?

Third question: Does the insurance (KELA) cover birth control pills?

You need to go to a doctor, and a doctor is the only one that may repeat a perscription, and a Finnish pharmacy will only sell medicine off a Finnish doctor perscription.

As Hank said, you need to see a doctor. So make an appointment and tell them what you need and you'll get the prescription. Kela doesn't cover birth control pills. Though I do seem to remember that for the first year you get them you don't need to pay. I don't know if that's the case anymore, but your doctor will know.

Since it's a women's health visit, it should be free of charge also.

I get a 3 month supply of birth control for about 25 euros, not too shabby.

Hehe, and rightly so :D


Finland has a massive problem in the future.........not enough people. Many people are choosing not to have kids nowadays, hence the fantastic Kela benefits available to encourage people to bang out kids!

If they went and covered the cost of helping people not become pregnant, I guess it would be sort of defeating the objective :P

Here's an idea - why doesn't KELA offer free condoms?

The brand could be associated with golf and called "Below Par"... or come to think of it, Hole in One might be a fitting name, since each and every one of these KELA contraceptives would be mysteriously riddled with 18 holes :wink:

I hope that isn't the real reason.

Just imagine in a few generations time, when only those not capable of earning enough money to pay for birth control are breeding, if there's any genetic predisposition to earning money (or rather not), then Finland at least, will be full of people unable to make money in a few generations time.

That was a situation I might have had in mind ;)

I remember being on a bus in London once, two 14 year old(ish) girls talking about marriage, one black, one white.

The white girl was saying that she wasn't going to get married, she was just going to find a rich man, and get pregnant to him, then live off child support and benifits.

The black girl on the other hand believed that marriage was something special and wanted to live happily ever after with her man when she found him.
