Oh Hannah your article was a brilliant read, well done for getting it all set up and published like that! Did someone post the magazine over to you from the UK or are you a subscriber?

I did laugh at what you wrote about John saying 'ku*i' instead of 'kuusi'! I don't know how many times my DH had to emphasise the importance of pronouncing 'kuusi' correctly when I first moved over here with him!

Will take your tip on board about children being encouraged to sleep outdoors - had never heard that one before!

Shame I live 'up North' really as I would have come to your M&M meets! Funny enough, I do see a lot of buggies/prams in the restaurant in our Stockmanns though so maybe someone up here does a similar thing?!

Yeah, what is this about putting children to sleep outdoors? I thought my neuvola midwife was kidding when she said it. Seems that they even put babies out in winter

Hanna, I'd love to hear what your birthing experience here! (save for the gory bits of course  ) For starters, does the Kätilöopisto hosp even accept a birth plan? I've been reading so much about birth plans but I don't know if there's a 'Finnish way' of doing things over here.

Sophie was born in Naistenklinikka. I didn't have a birth plan. My main reason for this was that I'd never been in a birthing situation before so had no idea what to expect. i just wanted to go with the flow and see what happened. Had the baby been indistress then DH and myself would have listened to the doctors and their decision. I was not planning on a natural delivery, I just wanted to go with whatever was happening at the time. In the end the epidural was the best thing to go with and boy it was wonderful!

My birth story http://www.quayclark.com/sophie1.aspx edit- it wasn't a few stictches, it was the entire Bayeux Tapestry with the midwifes full name embroidered in for good measure!

Thats just it, babies take their naps outside, also in winter. There was talk about it just two months ago. Here: bb/viewtopic.php?t=19254&highlight=babi ... ng+outside

I don't recommend going with any other birth plan than "the baby's
coming out, one way or another". I know the midwives where my MIL
worked used to laugh about people coming in with 8-page birth plans and
demanding this and that because someone on the Internet said it was the
best thing. Or the people who then complained afterwards because the
birth didn't go the way they wanted it (c-section, a particular pain reliever,
etc.).

I know it sounds mean and b*tchy, but knowing what your options are
vs. demanding them because they're in some birth plan are two
completely different things. I recommend the former, not the latter.

And yeah, I know I've no right to talk (as I've been told quite a few
times by Finns) since I go from 0 cm to out and stitched up in under
an hour.

And as for the babies sleeping outside in the winter, it's completely
normal. They're warm enough if the back of their neck is warm and their
hands and feet. They're too bundled up if their neck is sweaty.

Penny,

There's an international Mums&Kids group here in Oulu.
We're a sub-group of the Oulu International Women's Club and meet roughly every 2 weeks.
We usually take turns hosting a get-together at each others homes but next week, Tues 27.3, we're renting a place near the city centre.

If you're interested to join us then PM me and I'll give you the details.

I'm also pregnant - already week 35.

If you have any questions you can also send me a private message - no matter if it is about maternity or baby clothes, medical system ...

Or I guess we will meet at Stockmann on Thursday.

All the best for you

Hi Katgrrl,
If you are going to Haikaranpesä they have a birthplan, but as Enk pointed out it is just good to know your options and have an open mind about it. At Haikaranpesä you go through your birth plan a few weeks before due date.

hi all,

My maternity leave started two weeks ago already on March 15th, I am feeling great, and hope to see you soon at Stockmann. I do not know if you remember me but we met at my Thai last year in December I think.

Cheers,

Fabi

What about Double test and scan - does triple test exist?

Post by Modesty » Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:53 pm

Hej - Has anybody heard if tripletests are available in Finland? I had a high-risk doubletest+NF scan .... but still low enough not to risk a miscarrige with invasive tests.

I asked if a triple or quadro test was available .... but Neuvola had never heard of them ? (I found that a bit strange ... but with 17+0 it is nearly too late now anyway)

So anybody else that has experience with this side of the Finnish health system?

Thanks

I really do not know.

But I would suggest you to turn to Naistenklinikka - this is the University Clinic. Maybe they can help you.

Hi, I'm from Tbilisi, Georgia and I am accepted at the university of Jyavaskyla for this fall term. And as the admission letter arrived I found out that I'm pregnant, (now 7weeks), although unplanned :ochesey: It's too difficult for me to imagine studying and being pregnant abroad at the same time and giving birth during exams period, but I'd rather trouble than making abortion.

Anyway, I feel happy

Oh, can anyone tell me approximate prices for checking with doctors and birthgiving? It's tooooooooooooo important for me, because I've got scholarhsip only 450EUR per month and I have no idea how much I need to take in Jyavaskyla additionally.

Thanks to everyone for any information and for opening this post.
