'But we all turned out alright'
Don't mean anything offensive, but are you sure? There were 6 kids in our family, I got smacked, strapped at home and primary school, probably left me with a lot of hang ups, I was bad too, but that was probably a reaction to being slapped, if I was going to get punished anyway... And what was the point of being honest 'Did You do that?' 'Yes' whack, so a 50/50 chance of getting away with it if I lied and I did lie frequently, a good lesson for the future? And what's the point of telling your child not to bully smaller kids if you bully them.
We can't say it didn't do us any harm because the only way we can find that out is to be sent back in time and grow up in a non-violent home and then compare ourselves when we have reached adulthood twice.
Offer nothing but love to a child and then that child will feel they have something to lose.
P.S. I wasn't bruised or what's considered a 'battered child' it was probably 'normal' for that period.

We'd get spanked with a belt or we'd get pinched. School was the worst. If it wasn't a shoe or a blackboard ruler, then it was kneeling down or squatting in front of the class. In high shool squatting with your hands held high or standing up holding your chair in the air was quite popular with the teachers. School prefects used to hand out weekly punishments that were done on Saturdays (during our free time, I was in a boarding school). They'd be anything from sorting a bucket of beans or rice to cleaning the loos or collecting dog crap around the school compound. Never would I want to subject anyone to any of that, least of all my child. There are better ways to deal with the small 'violations' we made.

Heh, that sounds like the Baptist "Sunday school" I was forced to go toRA wrote:We'd get spanked with a belt or we'd get pinched. School was the worst. as a child. In addition to similar punishments, we also got locked in
closets for being (in their opinion) smartasses. I ended up getting thrown
out of the joint because I asked too many difficult questions about
Christianity. Didn't miss the place at all.

Kenya in the capital, Nairobi. Don't worry not all schools were/are like that, just happened I had to go there

Mine was a Roman Catholic, all girls school. One of the 'best' memories I have is of Sr. Stella Marie blasting a group of us and telling us 'Girls, you'll just have to water the flowers and if they die, you die with 'em!' I was terrified. I did meet some of my closest friends there however, including the friend I mentioned in the another thread some days ago. (She was laid to rest today btw).enk wrote: Heh, that sounds like the Baptist "Sunday school" I was forced to go to

May she find a peaceful and happy place where she is now. It's a good thing she had someone like you in her life.RA wrote:I did meet some of my closest friends there however, including the friend I mentioned in the another thread some days ago. (She was laid to rest today btw).
