Watching (TV) football in Helsinki

Post by vili » Tue Apr 24, 2007 8:08 pm

Is there a bar or a pub in Helsinki where British football fans gather? I'd love to see Chelsea vs. Liverpool tomorrow, and all two or three Man Utd vs. Chelsea matches that we are blessed with this spring, but don't have the TV channels that show them. As I would prefer English commentary anyway, I was wondering if there is a specific place to go?

We don't have televisions in Finland. Also pubs are forbidden. The favorite pastime of people is to find a big cardboard box, one goes in and the other one tries to guess who is in the box.
Cheers, Hank W.

Strange, I was raised to believe that this is the Swedish national sport. You sure you're in Finland?

Sports academy is reopening I hear. Then there is Chelsea bar, Paino bar, Bakers, Mamas and Papas almost all local pubs show premiership too.

You wont get english commentary all the time though, its about 50-50 on Canal plus and Viasat.

Allegedly Aussie bar and Mollys have Sky sports.

For the price you spend on beer you may as well just pay for Canal plus and or Viasat IMHO

30€s each a month, I typically spend that much when I go to the pub and drink €6.50 pints.

Thanks! But none of these places is known as THE place to go if you want to watch the game with British supporters?

Yeah, well, although I don't actually drink beer I know that these places are not exactly cheap. I'd get Viasat and/or Canal+, but since the football season is going to end within a month or so it seems kind of pointless at the moment. (I just moved here.) Maybe in the autumn.

Dunno mate like I said I watch it at home, I know a lot of Brits here who watch football in pubs but they don't tend to all go to one place all the time.

True I'm going to try and cancel mine for the summer.

Alrightie then, I guess I'll check out the Chelsea Bar or something as it seems to be so conveniently next to the Central Railway Station that I'll be passing by anyway. Though I wonder whether there'll be any Reds fans there, considering the name of the place!

Even though its called Chelsea bar there probably wont be any rent boys in there, most Finns are bindipper fans.

I've never been to the Sports academy but it re-opens on friday, apparently you'll be able to watch the game while pissing your beer money down the drain. :beer_yum:

I've been to Chelski bar a few times, never overcrowded so you can pick your screen and get comfortable and there's always a variety of 'shirts' in there for any game.

The best supported club i have ever seen in there were 'bindippers' (had to google that) but it's not a big place
