I'll be making a long-haul flight (12 hours but from door to door it's actually 24 hours - eek!) with my 14-month old soon. 2 transit points.
We didn't manage to get the bulkhead seats and airline policy stated we couldn't book the bassinet either for babies over 8 months old. But we got window seats.
Any tips to survive this trip?

Thanks!

Worst age to fly with kids IMO.... they are active, curious and full of energy BUT they are too young to read, play Gameboy/Sudoku, watch the in-flight movie
I used to make sure mine got lots of fresh air and exercise before we went to the airport and then I would let them run around the departure lounge as much as possible (just ignore the grumpy people around you). So by the time we boarded they were pretty tired and hungry. Luckily our Paris-Jo'burg flights were over night (leaving 10 pm and arriving just after breakfast) so their natural sleep routine was not really disturbed. Flying east-west is much harder.
New toys with novelty value are a good idea.
Skip the foods with high GI, but lots of water to avoid dehydration.
You will probably be seated next to other young families (I noticed some airlines group the young kids together, usually at the back)... maybe yours will find a friend!!!

Oops, I forgot to mention that I'll be making the trip ALONE with baby. It was such a help to have hubby with me as we could take turns looking after baby - during mealtimes etc. Am wondering what to do if I need to use the restrooms etc...
Thanks!

I asked them to bring me my meals when the kids were asleep and I
just hauled them to the bathroom with me (the inva WC/changing table
one is usually bigger) and put them up on the counter. On a couple
of flights stewardesses/stewards have offered to take care of the kid
if I need to go the bathroom, which was an incredibly nice offer for
them to make. But I usually tried to time everything to when they
were asleep.

Remember to take liquids in visible bottles and follow the rules of not more than 100ml of liquids except for food etc which should be in clear plastic containers..
Easier to take empty bottles for water and milk etc..( if cows milk..otherwise baby milk in cartons)..
same holds for medicines and make-up things etc..( like baby powders, oil etc etc).
Take ear plugs during take off and landings..
Small stroller that you dont need to check-in ( These services are available for long haul, but check with your airlines)...so that you can keep your kid in the stroller in the transits...
Since you will be going through at least 2-3 metal detector scans and security checks, minimize liquids like water bottles or drinks etc..Buy it in the airport n throw away...Also instead take empty baby feeding bottles that can be re-filled..
Take your chances on carrying 200ml tetra-pak food items for the baby: doesnt work out. then ask them to throw it away...
Always take some free locks with your hand luggage in case you are asked/forced to check-in some items that are not allowed for carry-on.
They are now more stricter on carry-on size...so a Baby-Bjorn type bag will be useful..
Take a couple of favorite toy for your kid to keep them occupied..if Not, then when you enter the aircraft, ask the stewardess if they have some toys..They generally do..
Follow Penny's advice on routine for making them tired before the flight and so they ll sleep in the plane..and keep them hydrated all the times..
Take an extra piece of woolen or pomoll shawl to keep them warm when the plane gets cold even though they provide blankets..
and Did I say earplugs..for both take off and landing as well as keeping them quiet with the noisy airport surroundings..
They sell those orange adjustable putty types nowawayd to fit the ears of anyone..
If you are not allowed a nose spray for landing/takeoff becos of security, use a drop of water in the nose before take off./landing..
for energy boost, take some solid bars for the kid n you so when u re tired an exhausted, you have ur energy bar next to u..
Good luck travel ling.
