Pregnant international student in Finland

Post by Mancho » Fri Apr 13, 2007 7:22 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm from Tbilisi, Georgia and I'm just accapted to the University of Jyväskylä, but I found out that I am pregnant now. Could anyone provide a link or any information if there is any assistance from government for pregnant and mother students in Finland? and the prices of gynecological visits?

Generally, one gets student aid or social security if you are a Finnish permanent resident and work here (depends what you ask for). For example if you are coming to study you're not entitled to any student aid (you already get free education). The students have the YTHS coverage; but in the case for pregnancy I am not sure as to how that exactly goes.

Congratulations anyhow.
Cheers, Hank W.

YTHS won't touch you if you're pregnant, you have to call the
local neuvola. The neuvola should also be able to tell you what
your options are, who pays for what, if anything, etc.

Good luck,

Hank said it; congratulations, but still - I doubt if whether as a non-citizen you'd be entitled to any of the KELA benefits for mothers... unfortunately!

For more exact info you should perhaps contact the University of Jyväskylä - say, the International Office. They'll help you find out about the local YTHS (Student Health Care) services & what they have on offer. They might help you find suitable accommodation through KOAS - suited to your forthcoming, erm, situation.

I studied at Jyväskylä University myself, but have no experience of being pregnant

Hi!

I have contacted KELA, and I have checked other sites as well, but as it seems, unfortunately, I am not eligible for any kind of support as I am an international from non EU country.

Could you help me once again? I am going to have a baby in December and I begin my studies in September. Does anyone know if I can take one year pause during my Master and then go on again while baby is 1years old?

thanks again!!!

There is a rule about this suspension, so you need to ask the university. Having a baby is generally on the list of "good reasons" they accept. But you need to check with the university what the rules are.

Finding someone in the same situation is really encouraging. Thank you for such detailed describtion. After Hank W. 's advice, anyway, I was afraid to contact the university, I thought they might reject me from their students list because of my pregnancy.
Now I see it's not as dangerous :D

I sent a letter to the university today and waiting for reply.

If I have some questions your advices will be really useful for me, as from an experienced "adviser" in this case. :D

So, good luck in your studies and happy life with your child.
