After maternity & paternity allowance there is the parental allowance, that can be held by the mother or father (or both as partial parental allowance). I assume that you mean after the parental allowance, as most call it too maternity allowance (but since I, darn it, don't get maternity allowance, I'm kind of particular about what they are called).

After the parental allowance you can get child care subsidies, if the child isn't in a day care payed by the municipality. There is one subsidise for private day care until the child goes to school, and another for "home care" (child at home, cared by grand-parents, etc.) until the child turns 3 (or two years at home, if adopted). You can get a higher subsidise if your family's income is under a certain amount (check Kela about this). Some municipalities, like Espoo, have an extra "kotikuntalisä", that you can apply for at the same as you apply for the child care subsidise.

Yes, Sarah, the child home care allowance is really great, as far as I know Finland is the only country in the world to have one? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. (It's completely unheard of here in the UK, at least.)
