4th June - Flag Day for the Finnish Defence Forces?

Post by OliBlom » Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:40 pm

Anyone know anything about the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of the Flag day of the Finnish Defence Forces taking place in Senate Square on June 4th?
Hearing that many surrounding streets will closed on Monday from 11:30-14:30 as well as most parking being prohibited and tram services affected!

What are you babbling about? Finnish Flag Day is Midsummer Day?

The 4th of June is birthday of Mannerheim. Flag Day of the Defence Forces.

Ah, 90 years from this- so they're having the main parade in Helsinki.... 30 vehicles, 1800 men + veteans + organizations... yup, definitely some "disturbance in traffic" (remembering the Hämeenlinna and Turku highways will have convoys before and after)

Jep, the parking is already screwed up in Kruunikka, since most of the no-parking is from today.

Here it is English.......... http://www.mannerheim.fi/01_elama/e_lipjuh.htm

.........OK so now i get it, it is the flag day of the Defence Forces.

Mannerheim’s birthday, the 4th of June, was nominated the Flag Day of the Defence Forces by a decision of the government on 4 June, 1942.

*I upadated the subject line and my first post so it is clear*

Anyway, back to my first question, anyone what takes place and when?

It’s all described here. (See the “Paraati” and “Aikataulu” links on the sidebar.)

For anyone interested, Mannerheim's birthday is the one day of the year when they let you wander around his railway carriage (the one he used during the war). A shame it's this Monday as we are going to Mikkeli today :( Still there's always next year.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day touring Mikkelis' military museums, the old base and 19th century barracks. Can thoroughly recommend it, if you are that way inclined.

All info is available from the usual tourist info places, however if anyone wants more detailed info about what to see, feel free to PM.

Where is it?

And where is the best place to watch the parade? I was thinking of taking the kids to Senate Square but maybe it is too crowded there.
