New York to Helsinki. Furniture : to move or not to move?

Post by tessa3d » Sat Jun 02, 2007 6:38 am

We are moving to Helsinki from NY, USA. We have some furniture in good condition and baby stuff like crib, high chair, car seat and so on..

We can use a moving service which will total ~ $5000 to move everything and we are not sure whether it worths to do so...

Any ideas?
Is it cheap and easy to buy a good furniture in Helsinki? Baby stuff?Where?
Could you recomend a good store or internet link?

Thank you for any advise,
Tatiana

Where will you move to, and will your furniture fit. If you are bringing the car, with the container, then by all means pack it up as its the same price. Just think if you have one of these American beds that fit a family of 6, that you have to then sleep in a Finnish living room, as you can't fit it necessarily anywhere else. Also "American standard" sizes are unavailable. However forget everything electronical that has only 110V. If its multivoltage then pack it, if its not just forget it. No use bringing a $10 blender you have to find a $120 converter for.

Well we are just moving and simply did the following.

Made a list of all Major items (easy cus our electrical stuff is 220v anyway, same as majority of USA now)

Then put a We have buy New Price , How Much we can Sell it for Price and Value of MUST Move (wont sell/ wont buy) next to the items.

The figures simply made sense to MOVE IT, despite the removal costs, THEN it allowed us to also move EVERYTHING else not on list such as garden tools, CD's, Junk, Books and my workshop stuff.

We figured second hand value to be 15% to 50% of original cost depending on condition and age.

Simply made sense to MOVE IT. I big container with car and household stuff in it and Bobs your Uncle, you have a 6 week vacation whilst it plods its way across the oggin.
I do not need to know you will attend my Funeral. I would rather you call just to say Hi !!
