Belgia - Suomi !

Post by Mies Belgiasta » Wed May 30, 2007 10:56 am

Today Belgium has to play against Finland (soccer).
Although I'm not a soccer fan, by far to be honest, I'm curious who is going to win. I think I'm going to make a bet again with my gf about who will win. :P

So , gentlemen, place your bets !!

Unless we are talking about youth football, I fear you have got your dates wrong. It's next week.

As a Belgian I feel a bit obliged to support for Belgium, but I think Finland will win! Anyway I will see it live in Helsinki!

As I suspected Belgium lost miserably

I think even the local pub soccer team plays better than those monkeys in our national team. I even wonder why Belgium still HAS a team

Onnea Suomi ! :D

Good write up here by WLM..
Especially the bit about the Owl... :D

Love this line..
Lest you think that one of the players should have trotted over and shooed the bird away, it should be mentioned that the eagle owl is not a pigeon or a gull, it is a BIG beast, nearly as large as a golden eagle, with a wingspan of up to two metres, and this one was playing at home, remember.
People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.

"There's no way I'd play Kuqi and Forssell up front like that -
Forssell likes to get the ball to his feet,
and all those long artillery lobs are poison to him.
But who listens to me, eh?"

Just wondering - let's imagine a situation in which

a) the ball is clearly heading for the goal
b) the goalie's hopelessly out of action, cutting his toenails or sending an SMS
c) a whacking big owl happens to cross the ball's path and *bump*
d) the ball actually fails to enter the goal

Now, what do the football rules say of such an occasion, as unlikely as it is? Or is there any applicable rule for that sort of "acts of God" so to speak? I mean, if it was blindingly obvious that a goal would have been in the offing, save for the owl... would it be counted as a goal or not :?:

Ask Roy Hodgson. He probably knows. He talks about this stuff here:

And (some) people wonder why journalists have such a bad name...

From yesterday's Guardian

Graham Poll did not slip away quietly in his final game. The referee flourished a red card at Belgium's Marouane Fellaini seven minutes after half-time in their Group A qualifier in Helsinki. Finland were a goal up at the time through Jonatan Johansson and went on to win 2-0. Play was held up for six minutes in the first half when an owl landed on the pitch and refused to budge.

Perfectly OK, you might say.

However... owing to the fact that he has retired from refereeing in the English Premiership and under FA rules, or whatever, Graham Poll was INELIGIBLE under UEFA rules to adjudicate on an international fixture in the EURO 2008 qualifiers.

He was replaced at short notice last Friday, when UEFA discovered their blunder (UEFA had nominated him in the first place). The match was refereed by Mike Riley, another Englishman.

But of course, the Grauniad journalist had a nice little one-paragrapher going for him. Graham Poll is a contentious figure, famous for having flourished THREE yellow cards to the same player in one match. The journalist "saw" he'd given a red card in his swansong, knew what he wanted to write, and really could not be bothered to check the facts, as they would only have watered down his story: nobody would grin and say "Typical, the old bugger just had to go out with a bang" about Mike Riley. Who actually had a reasonable game, and dealt with Bubi the owl quite sensibly.

But why let facts get in the way of a good giggle, eh?

It's been pointed out to them. Let's see if they change it. Don't hold your breath.
