It is not compulsory to change the residence permit before the previous one expires (although with a B permit for studies you will never qualify for Students Financial Aid from KELA). Should take the normal processing time I reckon, i.e from weeks to months, but Oulu Police Station gives out the decisions faster than Helsinki for example.
It took a week for me for the new A visa, but I had to change my passport first, as I had to change my name and they wouldn't give me a new visa in the wrong name. Then Kela took a bit longer to figure out that I was married. But then I got back payments. And yes, students can get married, mind you, I was the oldest in my class where I was studying. I sat an exam in the morning and was married in the afternoon.

I vaguely remember a thread about this some months ago. It was a south American student who had problems because in her country (IIRC Chile) a married woman keeps her own name, her embassy would not issue her a passport in her (Finnish) husband's name.Alicia wrote:It took a week for me for the new A visa, but I had to change my passport first, as I had to change my name and they wouldn't give me a new visa in the wrong name.
My passport is in my maiden name, even though I am married, and so is my KELA card, in fact all my Finnish paperwork is (bank cards etc).
I think the rule is that your Finnish ID, visa, KELA must be in the same name as the one that figures in your passport. But you do not have to change your passport if you do not want to (but check with your embassy). I have a note in my passport that says I am married to "nameofhusband", which is useful if I am travelling with my kids (who have their father's name)
But hackoff is, I'm guessing, a man so presumably will not change name anyway.
No, it is not very full, there is comfortable space. I just meant that I don´t understand this "everything has to be ready before I marry/have children" -attitude that is so prevalent nowadays, and that was so absent still 30 years ago. There is an old Finnish saying "Laps tuo leivän tullessaan", and it is still true. I miss some spontaneity.Quote:
That way Finland would be empty.
I do not think that Finland is very full!
Re: student getting married
for those who might be interested it took 3 months and half to get the new resident permit .

I don't think you can get student KELA money, even after you're married. Because you came here first as a student, and now have married here, and then you will continue to study..... I think the rule is that you are supposed to come here for some other purpose first (ie other than studying) be resident for 2 years or more, THEN you can start to claim KELA student money (I know a South African student friend who is married to a Finn who gets KELA money this way). I don't think simply marrying your Finn changes the case, unless you were here before you were married, but not as a student. But in your case this doesn't apply unfortunately. But I could be entirely wrong, my brain is abit fuzzy (I hope my writing makes sense, believe it or not I'm a native speaker!!) I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet.
