English speaking family groups

Post by fabi77 » Mon Aug 06, 2007 9:30 am

Hi all,

Do you know any daycare family groups using English? or perhaps anybody interested on forming one?

We want to put our son to daycare at the beginning of next year, February to be precise, he will be less than one year old (9 months) by then so we think family groups are better than the päiväkoti and we would like our son to master English first.

My husband is Dutch, I am Mexican and we use English as family language, so Finnish is at the moment the less important language so far (we would like to relocate eventually)

If you are interested or know of an existent one, please post on this thread or drop me a message to fabiola.lopez(at)yahoo.com

Just to let you know English kindergartens wont take children until they are 3, however if you plan on being here that long I suggest you find one youre interested in and join the waiting line already. The place I work at has a waiting line that is 3 years long!

I dont know any family care in English, I suggest you ask in the area you live, e.g. Helsinki city. I dont know much about them but I should imagine your city keeps a list as these adults also have to have a criminal background check.

Another option is to appraoch the ministry of labour and advertise for someone English speaking to take care of your child in your home. Either as a daily basis or you could look to have a nanny live with you (American or English). You give them room and board and only have to pay them about €300 a month.

Is this true? I think that this is au pair pocket money levels... nannies cost some 100% more I understood.

I remember someone on this forum changed from au pair to nanny, and said that the wages were higher and it was difficult to find a family willing to pay that much.
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Well it seems like the aupair option is quite affordable, but we will have to move out to an omakoti for that to work ;).

I thought the "family group" choice you could actually arrange it with other parents so every family gets to take care of a group of kids.. anyhow I will evaluate all possible options..

thanks for your help

Another option is the 'park nanny' option. There are a lot in Espoo and a few in Vantaa and Helsinki as well. It's for about 3 hours a day. Our park nanny spoke English fluently though we told her it was fine to speak to our daughter in Finnish.

Ummmm... no. A "family group" is usually some lady taking in 2-3 other kids usually as well as her own. Then there can be a "group of family groups" but basically the person in question is paid by the county and usually has a nurse training as well as has taken a course in "family group" child care.

So its on a "professional level" - or atleast tries to be.
Cheers, Hank W.
