Where to find Full Fat Organic Milk?
Hi. I have started my daughter (16 months old) on cows milk, I really want to give her organic milk but can only find skimmed (rasvaton) and semi-skimmed (kevyt) organic milk. Seeing as the guidelines are to give the full fat type to kids under 2 years of age -does anyone know if there is somewhere that sells full fat (tays) organic (luomu) milk in Finland/Helsinki??

Valio does not sell it

One of the milk companies used to sell something called Midnight Milk (Yö something maito???) which although not luomu was NOT homogenised (so the creamy bit floats to the top). The cows are milked during the night.... but I can't remember the reason why.
BTW, in France we were told to give semi-skimmed milk to toddlers, not full-fat. If your child is eating solids I am not sure that it really makes a difference. And personally I think full-fat milk is difficult to digest, yuck!

I take it that you're suppose to drink it as such and not drink that amount in your cups of coffee in the evening...EP wrote:Milk that is milked at night contains 4 times more melatonin than day-time milk. It is for insomniacs and people who have trouble sleeping "normal hours". Get in there...
According to Ingman the fat content is "Rasva/g 1.50". Here: http://www.arlaingman.fi/fi/tuotteet/?p ... csid=1&p=1

I was also looking for full fat organic milk. A friend told me that here it is recomended to give kids semi-skimmed but didn't know why (she doesn,t have her own children) but at home I was told by my health visitor to give my daughter full fat milk until she is 5, for the resons mentioned above. I would like to knowe the reasons for recomending semi-skimmed here.
Probably because if kids get used to drinking full fat milk they will never drink the semi-skimmed stuff..... and quite frankly they do not need the extra fat these days.... they get enough animal fat in all the other crap food (eg makkara) they eat anyway.
The difference in calories between the two is minimal.... less than a piece of cheese.... And there is more protein per 100g in semi-skimmed milk. Not sure what the difference in Vit A is though, but why would it be less in semi-skimmed. My guess is that semi-skimmed organic milk has more Vit A than full-fat non-organic milk..... but only guessing. Milk is only a part of a toddlers diet so I think we are splitting hairs. One of my kids has never drunk a drop of cows' milk in his whole life and he is none the worse for it.

All the searches on the internet and my midwife/doctor all seem to recommend giving babies under 2 full fat milk, fat carries essential vitamins A and D, so by skimming the fat off the milk, the vitamins are reduced, too. My little one doesn't eat makkara and the like so I wanted to ensure she had her fat intake. I agree that people don't need more calories but have to disagree that babies don't need the calories - their needs are quite different than that of an adult. Anyway, its up to the individual I just wanted to find organic milk..

I never gave Sophie full fat milk...my local shop didn't stock it so it was easier to get semi skimmed. Neuvola suggested that once off the formula to give her skimmed milk and was surprised when I told her she was having the semi skimmed stuff. The UK is different and recommends full fat milk...I went for a half way measure!
I also made sure she had a full fat yoghurt on a daily basis...she wasn't a cheese fan!
