Have any of you gotten it or plan to get it for your kids? Reino had his 6y checkup this morning and got two vaccinations. He just moved out of a perhepäiväkoti into a larger päiväkoti. He had a very healthy 5 years in the smaller place and although the other kids got chicken pox, he never got it. I asked if I should expect him to get it or if his otherwise healthy streak (two ear infections in 6 years and maybe 1 cold per year) to screech to a halt. She said that for the first six months, there could be an increase in illnesses for him. We talked about the chicken pox vaccine and I was mostly curious if it would protect him through adulthood. She said it would be the same as if he had gotten it as a child. I have several scars from chicken pox on my face and other places. The vaccine is €140. I think I could be more diligent about keeping him from scratching than my mom was with me. (Not her fault, she had 5 kids.) And aren't there some very good anti-itch ointments or other treatments these days?
Please share your experiences and any advice. Are there other vaccines that aren't part of the public system that are very useful and recommended? He isn't scheduled for any others until he's 14, so I'd like to make sure that he's covered. He has had the TB vaccine. I understand that one is only optional now. We travel once a year to North America and once a year to the Canary Islands.
Chicken pox vaccine?
Karen, you should search the string about chicken pox, there was a big discussion about it here not too long ago.
To summarize,
1) they don't give the vaccine in Finland automatically unless you ask for it.
2) Once you have chicken pox, you won't get it again. It's highly contageous and if your child have been exposed, it's possible that he already got it. (It could come unnoticed.)
3) Even vaccinated as a child it could reoccur as adult, but symptoms will be milder.
4) last, but very important: It's harmless to get as a child but more dangerous when an adult, especially if a female and pregnant. (high risk for fetus etc...)

I would recommend the vaccine for any child who, for any reason, takes cortisone (eg eczema, asthma etc). Chicken pox is the same virus as herpes and any form of cortisone makes the virus flare up unimaginably. My son (the atopic one) is COVERED in chickenpox scares because we were treating his eczema with cortisone creams when he caught chicken pox.... and nobody told me to stop
(btw, he was only 7mths old and I had only recently stopped feeding him so I thought he was immune)

Hello!
My two daughters have been vaccinated in Finland. I asked for it and i don't regret since like you i had bad memories ans dome scares from my childhood. It cost between 60/70 euros depending from which pharmacy we got it, but if you want it, call the pharmacy before because they don't all have it in stocks
And before you decide to go for it, be sure your child hasn't had it yet!

chickenpox
I would suggest seeing if the nurses can do a screening test to see if your little one has already had a mild case of it without you knowing.
I myself would check that first even if I had to pay for it.
Then if he hasn't I would wait for a year and see if he gets it naturally...and maybe next year go for the immunisation.
My main reason for believing it is better to get the pox is that it is such a dreadful lifethreatening illness to get as an adult.
With all these childhood diseases you know where you are if they have or have not had them.
All the best xx
