Inheritance from Finland

If a person gets an inheritance from Finland and lives in Canada,do they have to pay taxes for it ?

I think probably yes. My SO (who is Finnish) had an inheritance from Finland while he was living in France and he had to pay tax on it in Finland. He was not liable for additional tax on it in France. But it might be different with Canada... you would need to check the bilateral tax treaties.

It depends on the amount. I read recently that the laws on inheritance tax were changing. Oh, here's the article.

My dad got an inheritance from Finland but he lives in Kenya and didn't have to pay tax for it.

Inheritance tax is levied on the following property
received as an inheritance or a bequest:
1) any property, if the deceased or the person who receives the property as an inheritance
or a bequest was resident in Finland at the time of death;
2) real property situated in Finland and shares or other rights in a corporate body where
more than 50 per cent of the total gross assets of that corporate body consist of real
property situated in Finland.

Excellent replies ! I like the tone of this place.Usually the Finnish forums
are hard to take ! The people are so rude to each other and swear like
troopers ! I get so sick of it and now...I actually met civilised people and

Yes....never be rude,unless absolutely forced to !

No,lots of nice Finnish people in Finland.Big cities folks are mor
uptight,but go to the Country side and you learn better Finnish
and also meet people who are more friendly and relaxed and
natural.

Hi,I read all the replies and I understand both languages.I just
love English language and prefer it,but I can speak Finnish and read it
just perfectly.But,after 30 yrs here...well...just feels more natural to
speak English.
