My sister in law works there as a midwife so I had a chance to get to know a lot of the in care nurses. There are a few jaded bad eggs - they will be unpleasant but not mean or vicious. But for the most part, there are a lot of really nice ladies working the maternity ward. And they wait on you hand and foot - anything you ask for, they help with. That was my impression.
For my birth, I went unmedicated and natural. Neither of the midwifes spoke English - they were doing a training so I had a very seasoned older midwife and another young girl who got me as her first birth (poor kid, nothing like an unmedicated mother to make you wonder....)
But it all went smoothly other than the annoyance of the midwife taking a bit too much time going over all that should be done, so tehnical to a T.
When I was there, the upper floor was closed for renovation and so we were all crowded in 4 to a room with the sounds of construction above us all day. But as I said, since the midwives were happy to do any request, I really felt very pampered. I just wish I could have got more sleep with having 4 moms and 4 newborns all waking up at different hours for feedings

Thanks everyone!
Ive just had 2 days in Jorvi so got to see for myself!
My blood sugar was a little high so I was in for 2 days for monitoring.
I had one morning midwife who spoke no English, but came to chat to me in Finnish and put up with my attempts!
Evening midwife was young and spoke English. Both were very pleasant and did everything possible to help.
Sadly saw a nasty piece of work doctor, who gave me grief because babys growth is one week ahead of the 'standard'
bigger babies are hard to give birth too, can have more problems, c-sections have big risk of infection etc etc. Miserable nasty old bat!

Well...doctors are supposed to say the worst that COULD happen.
But..I had big babies.9 lbs 5 oz and the number three was 10 lbs.6 oz.
Try to push that out. But,they come out.Believe me.I locked myself in
the bathroom and cried and prayed and he came out just fine.Had to
push harder for almost 5 kg's baby ! But,out he came naturally !
So,don't worry.Your baby most likely is not 5 kg.I bet he is not.He will come out just fine. Don't worry ! Go to the bathroom and talk to the Good Lord and He gives you sweet peace and then you can handle anything.
There is nothing like the JOY of seeing your newborn ! So special !
Be happy and DO NOT worry. It will be just fine !

Hi Sara,
Both our kids were born in Jorvi. They're quite good there at reacting to any alerts and they attend to you quite well. Doctors were nice. Just the attending nurse after birth (fresh from school, and has no kids of her own) was trying to give us child raising tips and giving brochures on bonding etc the second time around...Which was a bit awkward.
One thing though, and I dunno if this is important for you to get your own room or not, but to get a family room you need to ask for it beforehand. They will put you in common room (3persons/room) if you don't say anything or if you are having C-sec. And if you are in common room they come to help you but if in family room your hubby is expected to stay overnight and be there to help you. So don't be surprised if you are in family room and they don't come too often.

Docs
Sara
Being a Brit like yourself I too have had a few experiences with the Docs but it is not a personal thing nor is the Doc being unkind.
Some simply don't have a bedside manner are very direct in other words they say what they see and don't consider your feelings as I suppose this is their job. Also I have noticed it is the Finnish way. No disrespect to any Finns intended.
It sounds as if the Doctor was worried for your baby...trust me that is what you want.
I have to tell you it didn't matter that I was in kidney failure to the Docs as they were monitering me and wanted Grace in the womb as long as possible. Hence us in hospital for a long time.
I think if you get a Doc that makes you feel like this again be as direct back. That is what I did and after a few minutes of conversation you do begin to find an even footing.
All I have to say is from the sounds of it they are monitering you. Just make sure your glucose is monitered as much as possible Not Monthly!!!
Good Luck! xx

Thanks Michaela,
I did see a different doctor before I left. She was still a 'doctor' in mannor but much nicer with her communication.
The first doctor was also extremely rough with the internal exam and even the ultra sound. She had managed to annoy me from the start so it didnt help.
I was just surprised last time, normally I wouldnt let anyone get away with it. Ill be ready for any 'next time'
BTW I now have my own blood suagr monitor and my levels are fine, I think the hospital stress sent the one reading higher
Ill also be having more growth scans to check the size of the not so little one

6 month ago I gave birth at Jorvi. I was overdue and so they had "to start" the birth (I don't know the right words for it), it took some time, but I felt good with the midwives and they cared (.. at least I felt like they cared about me)
We had a family room and it was really great!
I wish you nice last weeks
and a good birth
