Sick leave / daycare

Post by raumagal » Tue Sep 11, 2007 11:22 am

I work part-time and am at home with the children during the day (so I get kodinhoitotuki). While I work in the evenings my husband watches the kids. I have to have an operation and will not be able to take care of the kids when I'm in the hospital so my husband will have to stay home with them during that time.

If I understand correctly, if a child is sick then a parent is entitled to take paid time to take care of the child. But in this case where I will be in the hospital then my husband needs to take unpaid leave. So we won't have any income during that time other than the kodinhoitotuki.

If all goes well then it shouldn't be more than a couple days but are there other options as far as daycare for the kids if it would be longer? Regular daycare takes a bit of time to get a spot. I know they need to guarantee a spot within a certain time if you are working but how about in this kind of situation? Or would there be some other short-term option available just for the time I'm in the hospital?

Thanks for your help!

Hmmm, why can't your husband get paid leave? You are in the hospital, so you can't take care of your children... I guess you'd get sairasloma and he'd get paid :?

I don't think daycare would be an option for a short-term period. But you could still inquire from the päivähoitotoimisto in your area.

Perhaps some hired help from MLL Mannerheim League for Child Welfare http://www.mll.fi Their rates aren't bad and you may get someone very good too.

Or maybe the neuvola could offer some advice?

Hope your operation goes well and you get better well soon!

I just asked a friend about this and she said you'd definetly get sairapäiväraha for the time you're on sick leave, but you should contact your city or municipality, or ask your neuvola to guide you on where to turn to ask for help at home while your husband works (päivähoitotoimisto?) or to give some financial support while your husband's home (social office?).

Thanks!

My husband asked at work at they said it would be unpaid. But I will ask at neuvola and also at the päivähoitotoimisto and see what they say my options are! :-) I tried calling them today but was unfortunately unable to get anyone while my son was napping.
