I rocked ds until he was almost asleep then I put him in his own bed to fall
asleep. I never let him cry because that just didn't seem right for us. I know
people who have done it. The most important thing is to follow your instincts
to know what is right for your baby.

Ds is 6 years old and I lie down with him every night when he goes to sleep.
He's the only child I'm ever going to have and I'll snuggle with him until he
gets tired of me and wants to go to sleep on his own.

It's all good advice and basically you need to go with what feels best to you. And we all agree that leaving a baby to howl for hours is not an option. I would still talk to the doctor about it because waking up DURING the night is not the same as not wanting to go to bed in the evening. One tip is to AVOID all fruits and juice that are rich in vitamin C before bed time. I was told this when mine were young. IIRC, vitamin C can have a similar effect to caffeine (ie a stimulant) which would possibly bring a toddler out of his/her sleep once s/he had initially dozed off.

I'm surprised what oompah18 said:
Remember you are not alone, most babies under 1 year don´t sleep all night
I think most babies do sleep through the night after 2-3 months old. Mine did (except for the middle one when his eczema was bad). Maybe not 10 hours in one go but at least 7-8 hours between last and first feed.

"On average, new mothers get less than four hours' sleep a night - half as much as their own mothers did"

...and the men still get 7 hours a night :-)
