what winter clothes to put on children to keep them warm ?!

Post by Ema » Mon Sep 24, 2007 9:13 am

Hi, this topic has only been discussed years ago (according to the search ), would like to get updated information.

There are quite a few options in the market now for winter overalls, Lassie tec, Ramu, Reimatec, .. and there is also the rubber overall which is very thick for winter use(Don’t remember what’s the name of the brand.)

ok, I think that Reimatec is the most expensive ones, lassietec and ramu are about the same level.

For shoes: Viking, Gore-tex, kuoma, N-tec. Heard good feedback for Gore-tex but extramelly high price.

What about gloves, hats, socks…

how to dress the children to make sure that they will stay in warm and dry. I heard that the children in kindergarten will be let out to play even the weather is not that pleasant. so what kind of clothes would cope that the best? It can’t be too thick so that one can move easily and yet warm enough. In really bad weather like raining or wet days. the rubber overalls are more practical. Some moms put the rubber trousers which used in autumn on top of the winter overalls, but it is very difficult to pull off. what about the rubber made winter overalls, anyone has experience on that. should I buy two overalls then, one rubber and one normal.

what winter clothes to put on children to keep them warm ?!

Hello

With shoes Gore-tex is the winner, over the years we have tried buying cheaper shoes but they are no good , with the children letting you know that thier feet are wet or cold and you end up buying the Gore-tex Citymarket alway seem to have an offer on these, they cost around 69 euros up to 90euros , so look around. Last year we got the winter suits from H&m and they were great, but we always have a wooly suit under the winter suit.

Hope this helps

hi, is the Gore-tex the same thing as viking gore-tex? I have seen two different version. one has viking clearly marked on the heel of the shoes and the other one only has Gore-tex. Price is about 20-30e difference.

The rubber pants and jacket are better as seperates so the kids just put them on when its raining. Otherwise the kids get so sweaty underneath as the fabric doesnt breath. These snow suits with the rubber leg coating arent always very good. At kindergarten we used to find a lot of children would still get wet bottoms.

For the heart of winter you really need these wooly suits that Richard mentioned under the snow suits also wooly socks, a good hat and gloves. Younger children also wear these thin 'hats' that just open at the face and cover the head, ears and neck too
Ive found that many parents layer the gloves so wool mittens with the thick sort over the top.

Hi! I have always bought all my tots´winter clothes from flea markets (kirppis) & huuto.net etc. I have never had a problem keeping the kids warm & comfortable, even down to minus 32C, the lowest i have experienced here! Firstly, normal inside clothes, then the must-have wool all-in-one, usually zipped up, preferably a little bit loose fitting! Then the haalarit, skisuit thingy - I have usually got Reimatec talvihaalarit 2nd hand for about 10-20 euros & never had problems! Then thin, gloves, under wool mittens, thick wool socks over normal socks, balaclava, & then winter hat on top. The kuorma boots are the best i reckon, slip on, warm & great for freezing snow, not melting sludge!
Anyway, that´s what I have found works. Also, by buying all the stuff from the kirppis, it is so cheap that each of my boys has at least 2 of everything - saves for emergencies!!!!!!!
Allie the kirppis addict!
Allie the Britmum, "äiti" to 3 boys, 10,9 and 7, & little princess, 4.

And just as you've managed to wrap all these around the child, THEN you'll hear the words - Mom I need to 'go'

hi, thanks for the replies. It seems like reimatec and kuoma are the most popular ones.

I love those flea markets. I personally think that there is no need to throw huge amount on children't clothes 'Cause they grow so fast. For this winter set, new ones cost around 250e which is for one winter only, it is just not reasoable. However, the bottom line is to keep the kids warm. I saw from huuto.net that people always ask how many times it has been washed. so I am a bit concerned about the second hand. Just like second hand car seats are not recommended.

Shoes, it is really confusing. ok, Gore-tex is the best, but then there are viking Gore-tex, Elefanten Gore-tex, Ecco Gore-tex. Are they all belong to the same company Gore-tex? are they about the same?

Sara,

I was actually planning on buying two overalls, one for normal winter, one for wet days. But you are right. The fabric of rubber coated overalls are not good breathable material.

Reima is the best one, it's more expensive, but it really is so much better.
Just make sure, you don't put Reimatec-products to any hot places, they "melt" inside. And make sure, that you tell that in daycare, cause our nanny ruined pair of "rukkaset" (I have absolutely no idea, what these are in English) by putting them over heater  .

No, Gore-tex is the name of the material. Just like "wool" is wool, "nylon" is nylon, and "silk" is silk.

oh, now I get it, I guess as along as the material is Gore-tex, it doesn't matter what brand it is.

well, just bought a reimatec overall from huuto.net . Ddidn't buy the package where there are shoes too, 'Cause not sure what size suits later (need to count the type of the wool socks too). There are still couple of months to go.

I feel that fleece is warmer than wool. anyone got opinion on that?

This is Gore-tex:

http://www.gore.com/en_xx/

I guess there are imitations now but it is a registered trade mark so look for the label on the garment.

I have also bought Gore-tex boots from Citymarket for my kids and they are great quality. I had problems with some Elefantan boots where either the zips jammed or the Velcros ripped off. Watch out for special offers: Anttila has Lasten kenkäpäivät (Kids' shoes days) from 26.9 to 9.10 with Viking Gore-tex at 69.90€ for kids and 54.90€ for babies (21-27).

Some advise:

If you live in the southern Finland where the typical winter weather is +5 to -10c, I'd recommend to buy waterproof overall (Reimatec, Remu, Jonathan, Rasavil etc.) and shoes with Goretex-film. Also a woollen suit to add in the middle if cold is handy. + gloves, mittens, woollen socks....

If you live in colder regions (east, north), a waterproof overall isn't a must kids won't get wet the same way. I've actually heard that Reimatec isn't the warmest overall, cheaper Lassie from Citymarket is lot better for cold and dry days. Also Goretex-shoes aren't the best for freezing temperatures, Kuoma-boots should keep toes warm and reasonably priced. And don't forget the woollen suit, gloves, hats, socks...

If Reimatec feels too expensive I'd recommend to check the other brands. For example Jonathan's overalls should be equally good, but more reasonably priced.

I remember that as a kid me nor my sister never had any flashy expensive shoes. For wet just ordinary wellies and for dryer some basic cheapish winterboots which both were stuffed with woolen socks.
The only times I felt cold in my feet was when I was skating and this was due to the tightness. (blood couldn't in the veins.)

I am not saying the gore-tex wouldn't be the best. I infact think it must be the most comfortable as it doesn't necessarily need that many layers. (children hate layers.)
I am just saying that if it is really too expensive then you wouldn't need to worry. Your children won't freeze in less expensive materials.

But I would suggest wool over anything. Wool not only is insanely warm but it also can gather third of it's weight of water without feeling wet at all. So the best way to keep your kids warm is wool. ;)

hi all,

haven't been able to access internet for days.

There are just so many options in the market. They all look similar and about the same quality, hard to choose for first time mom :-)

I also realize one thing, the shoe size is not the same with different brand even they all mark 21. I brought my little one to the market to try them on. For kuoma, 22 would be ok in the coming winter, but with viking Gore-tex 22, it is at least one size bigger.

Also the other day I bought one pair from flea market, marked 21, but after I measured it, it is at least 22. I can't blame anyone but myself of course. But they are all so small with only 1-2cm different, really couldn't tell well by sight.

By the way, who knows what's the rubber boots called in finnish for winter. is it kumisaappat? I mean the one that with thick layer inside.
