Birth Certificate for new born
Birth Certificate for new born
Hi,
I am due in Feb and I would like to know for the new born baby in Finland, do the hospital immediately issues Birth Certificate or do we need to apply in order to get it? If so what is the time frame approximately taken for the birth certificate to be issued.
I need this information since we have to apply for the baby's passport soon after its born and we have to plan our travel based on that

Oh is it so?
It will have an Indian passport and I did read in embassy site that for passport of new born, they need a birth certificate.
It was that before that used to endorse the child's name on mother's passport but now they have updated in the site that they no longer endorse and we have to apply for a new passport. And in order to do so, they have mentioned birth certificate as a requirement.
Any idea on where to ask on more info about birth certificate or whatever proof of birth?

Thanks for the info.
When we go to Maistraatti, would they require some form or some hospital letter for them to issue a social security number?
After coming to Finland, we went to Maistraatti and gave a copy of our passports and relevant documents. However for new born babies in Finland, how is it done?

I insisted while I was still in the hospital that I needed a birth certificate. The nurse took rather seriously and went to the birth section to ask for it. But the best they can do is issue a finnish paper (they don't have it in other language) where it writes baby-mom's name, was borned at what time, at what hospital, then midwife's signature.
I have never tried to use it anywhere 'Cause baby got her own passport quickly. But I doubt if it helps anything since it is in Finnish.

You can call your local Maistraati they sent mine in english

When I gave birth I asked several midwives for a birth certificate (if you're American the embassy requires one from the hospital as well as the one from maistraati) and it took a few days before I was able to get one because they didn't know what I was talking about. They kept insisting I wouldn't need one to get her passport, but the embassy insisted otherwise. You need to ask specifically for a CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH which is just a half page form with all your basic info on it as well as a stamp from the hospital and a signature from a physician or midwife. This certificate was all in English btw.
Congrats!

Hi mycp2005,
I'm in Helsinki. If you ask for the document exactly the way I wrote it in my previous post, they should understand you and you should have it before you leave the hospital to go home with your newborn. I kept asking for a birth certificate and for some reason that threw them off. I'm sure the Tampere hospitals have those CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH forms too.
Are you planning to take a tour of the hospital before you give birth? At least in Helsinki they offer guided tours in both finnish and english for mothers who plan to give birth there. You can ask then about this document or give them a call. If they do offer tours, I suggest you take one. It was nice to see the different birthing options and it's a good chance to ask plenty of questions about anything and everything
