Giving birth at Jorvi

It's very unsual to give birth at home in Finland. About 99,9% of the babies are born in hospitals or on the way there (or accidentally outside hospitals). It can be very hard to find midwifes to homebirths because it is so unusual that someone would volunteerily give birth at home.

So I highly recommed using a hospital, they are good and cheap. Did you know that due to hospital births, Finland has the lowest (or one of the lowest) death rate of newborn babies (there is a fancy name for this, but doesn't come to my mind right now).

ok, i figured that. thank you. do you know of a directory web site to find a hopital near where ill be staying? and another question, is it going to be offensive if im in the hospital and ask for no medicine, not even an iv? here in miami,florida we have most of our kids with a midwife at home so how are the births in the hospital there. is it just machines or can u choose a totally natural birth?

My wife had gas and air only for both our kids, and that was at her request, it certainly wasn't forced on her.

There are no private hospitals in Finland that would take care of childbirths.
Helsinki region is the only place where you get to choose between hospitals, there are 7 to choose between. Everywhere else in Finland you just go to the university/central hospital in you region (easy!). Where will you be living? Helsinki region? I'll tell you more about the choices if you will be moving to Helsinki region.

Yes, you can choose a natural birth if you wish. There are also bathtubs for water births in many hospitals. Especially a smaller hospital in Tammisaari is known to favor natural births (but medication is also available). You can go to Tammisaari ( 100kms southwest from Helsinki) if you're a resident in the Helsinki region.

yes and Kela pays for the trip to and from the hospital too ( matkakorvaus)
Tammsaari is also know for their acupuncture.
They have 2 rooms specialized for water births ( others have smaller bathtubs)..and this hospital does not recommend epidural..instead stretching and breathing exercises...not that they dont have it but dont recommend it..

I WILL BE IN Kauhajoki, VAASA. BUT IF THERE'S NO HOSPITALS CLOSE BY US I THINK WE MIGHT HAVE TO GO TO A HOTEL TO STAY IN HELSINKI FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE AND AFTER THE BIRTH

Of course there is a hospital in Vaasa, you go there. The Finnish hospitals are very good. Relaxed and friendly.

You need to sort out your healthcare coverage (Kela card http://www.kela.fi) as soon as you get here or else you may end up with a big bill.

Kauhajoki belongs to Etelä-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiiri (Etelä-Pohjanmaa hospital district) and therefore your hospital would be Seinäjoen keskussairaala (Seinäjoki central hospital), located about 50 kms (30 miles) northwest from Kauhajoki. It's a good place to give birth to your baby, so don't worry (and you can forget booking a hotel room in Helsinki).

When in Finland, just contact your communal terveyskeskus (health center) for more information on pre labor checkups, giving birth etc.

And just being curious: Why Kauhajoki? It's not one of the most obvious places for a foreigner to move into.

that's where my fiance is working. i see that its a small town n far from helsinki. u can just imagine moving from a big city to a very very small town......dont worry ill choke him once i get there. if we didnt already spend 2500 usd on the ticket i would stay my prego butt in the states!lol!

How do I find the place where they do scans? Because Jorvi is not only 1 building... And where to go? What to say? I am lost....I will be very happy if someone can help!

Oh, you are an Angel! I couldn't find this info in english, so I was worried...Yep, I think you are right about N building. I hope that when I will call for a taxi, and when I will say where to go, the taxi driver will not freak out of the idea me giving birth in his car

And, of course, since the day is coming for us, would be great to listen to some of your experience in Jorvi hospital, giving birth
