It's a good way to start to learn many every-day words.

I was using Finnish on my mobile until I got a new phone with far too many features. I've now reverted to English, shame shame...

The only word I learnt by doing that was 'kieli'.

I used to switch to Finnish, and then after a few hours when I realized that I could not understand anything at all, I reverted to English in panic. Therefore 'kieli' was the only word that i was able to memorize. I know, I should have stuck to Finnish.

But now my new phone does not have a Finnish option to choose from... so no guilt anymore :ochesey:

Argh, I used to but then I realized, why bother. English is the only proper language for technological terms nowadays. Any big high tech company uses English Language software rather than their own version. Anyway some of the terms that they use in Finnish are a bit dodgy. Some of the Finns more used to using English based meus find themselves a bit confused....

Many Finns use the english versions, becuase (so they tell me) the 'original' versions work much better than the translated ones.

I have English and Finnish versions of M$ Office, but obviously the English ones are most used (life is difficult enough without reaching for the dictionary if you want to do an unfamiliar task)

My phones are also English...

If you want to learn, use the Finnish ones, if you're running a business and time is precious, go to Finnish lessons and use English software!

Cheers
Gavin

I've heard this too. I've actually gotten specific instructions on certain software to not change the operating language to finnish, or to let anyone else change it for their convenience, because it would then crash.

I guess you got the 6600 then in the end! I have the same problem, going through all the damn menus in english let alone in finnish!

When I ordered my computer last year through Dell Helsinki, I ordered a new computer and all the operating systems including Office etc (with English language software). The computer finally arrived (built and distributed from Ireland) and it came with Finnish software. I phoned up to complain and luckily I had taken the next working day maintenance agreement for three years. They came to reinstall everything BUT I had to wait a week and a half for the new software as the old software had to be returned first before ordering the new software, nightmare! All was resolved and running well now. I still have to use WinXP in finnish at the office although I made them buy all english language software for me!

old post but feel like add few words... it reminded me of my using Windows in FInnish over 5 months. During that time i was able to remember quite many words. One reason could be i am familiar with Windows and simply remember all options and tools places. but now...ahh...
Once secretly playing with a new mobile model of a friend, Finnish menu got me panic.. Good that I knew how to go back back back to the 'front page'

I'm using Finnish on the mobile.
All goes well, until I have to check something deep in the menu... Then I have to switch to English

Personally...

I have had DOSat work, friends, family and acquaintances come forth with various; Swedish, Finnish, Greman, Greek, and whatnot OS.

My answer to them: SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE!

Anyone making an localized OS I shall make reinstall a French and Greek windows and then shooot the off their misery...

Trying to find a Finnish reseller selling an UK WinXP was an ordeal (and the only reason to buy a laptop - the niece is off studying, like WHO THE @#$% WILL UNDERSTAND THE OS IN COUNTRY X???).

I have a collection of UK OEM copies and the only reason I am installing a pirated Win "K in mine is that the eejits shall not provide an OS that works and in a language I will understand.

I do not support Finnish versions of Windows. My answer is Ctrl+Alt+Del & reformat the drive.

There is no U.K. version, only a U.S. version. The binaries are all stamped English (United States). Were you looking for OEM or retail media? OEM media can't be sold separately.

Poor excuse for software piracy by the way!

When they sell a computer in Finland they used to have:
Windows 95 OEM FI
Windows 95 OEM SWE
Windows 95 OEM UK
...as a choice.

These days they always have Windows XP Fin/Swe as the only option. Need to really do footwork to get an Windows XP in English (which I wouldn't want anyways). Its always been 'UK' here for English.

And I have an OEM licence for a Windows 2000 in English, I just don't have a media that will install it the way *I* want to install it. As in partitioning the hard drive in a manner I see fit and is sensible. Therefore I need to get a pirate CD as the retards at HP won't supply me with a proper installation CD. The HP laptop is an overheating POS anyways... nothing really bad, just the quality of connections and the overheating problem its a very nifty item.

Once the SuSe linux will understand my combo DVD- CD-RW, its going to make my life much less crash-prone.
Cheers, Hank W.
