Illegal furry immigrants -- what's live trap in Finnish?

Post by blaugrau » Mon Oct 22, 2007 8:59 am

Seems like we're having mice in our ruokakomero without residence permit. I'm thinking of trying to deport them with live traps, has anyone had experience with using those devices? What would be the Finnish word for it?

We can't get a cat, unfortunately, and I heard that poison is not very recommended since, if they eat it at all, the mice will die in some obscure little corner and then smell quite unbearably.

Any other advice is very welcome and appreciated.

Hiirenloukku... theres the traditional ones vs. some more modern contraptions. 50/60 chance your mice might be voles... any store having hardware... in the boonies has them. Remember to rope them down.

So we know if you get lucky you'll be asking for a saslik recipe

I remember my 4 yr old coming home from school one day. As usual I asked him what he had eaten for lunch. "Baby mice," was the reply, he seemed quite sure of himself. When I double-checked the school-dinner menu the next day I found out he had eaten... sardines!

We had a mouse invade our kitchen one year at Christmas.... all the shops were closed, impossible to find a trap. In the end we baited a plastic bucket with a piece of cheese. Sure enough he eventually climbed in and we threw a towel over the top and dumped him, still alive and full of cheese, into the back yard. Easy. In fact it took about 3 days to catch him, we were running out of ideas!

And if you can't beat them, join them and invite to movies with your family.

whoops, hopefully i haven't offended anyone ;-)

Deathtraps are set, as I sadly haven't found any live traps and am not very skillful in performing bucket tricks. Will consider the movie-invitation should everything else fail.

I'm a bit surprised you couldn't find live traps... Here, they come in a variety of sizes and models...from "mouse-size" up to "raccoon-size" here. Despite all the small critters around my place, only the occasional rat finds its way into my attic...maybe every couple of years. I have a system now that seems to work well...

Here's my philosophy ...despite what you might think there is no realistic way to get rid of the "pests" permanently. You just open up an "ecological niche" for others to move into. All you can do is "discourage" them. What I've noticed is that almost always the ones that cause a problem are young rats... They haven't figured out the "rules of engagement" yet.... you know, you stay outside and away from the house and I'll leave you alone; come inside and we're at war...

So I live-trap them and let them stay trapped for a good several hours, maybe overnight, so that they have had plenty of time to regret their actions and to associate my house with bad experiences...most of the time they have a bloody nose from their efforts at trying to escape... :)

Then I let them go out in the back lane... Then another couple of years goes by before I have a new visitor... My theory is they go tell their friends and relatives about their nasty experience... But, then, maybe I'm just crazy...

I think the rat that gnawed its foot off last winter spilled the beans on how tasty rat meat is, as it was half-eaten in the yard a few weeks after.

Today I received K-Rauta's latest freebie through my letterbox "Lokakuu 2007" and on page 27 there is an intriguing device  called a "hiiren- ja rotanloukut giljotti" for only 2€90 (mice) or 4€90 (rats). It looks like something straight from Place de la Concorde, and according to the specs it is "helppo-käyttösiä, kestäviä AND hygieenisiä".

At that price you can't lose.

Unfortunately couldn't find it on their website but the product reference is 162428.

Found it...

Click on the catalogue at the bottom/middle of the screen. Page 27
