I don't think there is so much people coming to try to get "free" money but more people who don't really think about what they are doing *before* they come here. And want other people to figure out the details for them. And then they post again in a few months and are miserable, desperate for any work, and broke. Then there are the totally clueless that think they will move here and just "think positive" and figure it out. Search that exact phrase if you want a good laugh on this forum. :)

Not saying that any of this is what you are doing...because you seem to at least be levelheaded and have some useful skills. But seriously, it will be a LOT harder than you think and just be really sure what you are getting yourself into. Read these threads as much as you can because honestly you are not the first person to go thru this. Yes, it may not be your *exact* situation but you can get a really good idea by reading other people's experiences. They all kind of follow the same script. As in: "I am moving to Finland for x,y,z reason. I don't speak Finnish. What can I do to survive?"

Good luck to you. It'll be interesting to see if you end up as a welder or translator.

i actually have just slightly less work than i did in moscow. but, we are a two income household, so it isn't much of a worry if i am earning say 10% less in any given month.

the more important thing for me is going from having a very wide social circle after 8 years in moscow to zero contacts here. we have a few 'friends' here from my fiance's office colleagues. but, it just isn't the same. thus, i am actually looking to take on some volunteer work or part-time work in my field (public health/HIV/AIDS/STIs) through contacts from several years ago. i need something that will get me out of the house and interacting with the locals. i should add that i know no finnish and the people i am meeting with this week do know that.

anyway. hang in there, bobs12. as i said before, we're happy that we no longer need to worry about the wonderful uncertain world of constantly changing visa regulations with absolutely zero clarity that is the life of expats in Russia! :)

Hey, well I just want to add, that as an EU citizen (I assume) registering to live and work here in Finland shouldn't be a problem.... but I have no knowledge/experience in this aspect so it could, in real terms, be different. But I would assume not.... Oh well.

Yep, I actually read the forum extensively, I understand that a lot of people say 'I move to XYZia, don't speak XYZish, what can I do?' not just in Finland. They do it here in Russia too, I have a site for them and a forum that tries to help them get English teaching jobs (which is pretty easy). They also try to get people like me to hold their bits for them, so I know it's annoying. However, I never felt that giving away information was a sacrifice, so I help where I can. I sometimes get free beer out of it :)

Kitty - that was one of the things I know I would sorely miss. Here I have lots of friends, contacts in bizarre places and a generally full and happy social life. The times I've been in Finland I realised it was socially very different to Russia and it would take much longer to get to know people and make friends.

Oddly, I kind of had that problem a few years ago, when I'd been away from working in schools for a long time and wanted to get back in touch with other teachers. I started a website for EFL teachers in Russia and suddenly I had more friends than I had time to drink with :)
