Post by markw » Tue Oct 30, 2007 9:19 am

Iam desperately trying to find work, i have now been living in ekenas for nearly 7 years now , and iam so desperate i can speak some finnish not great but i get by.

I have a near on perfect driving license nearly 24 years now .
Iam willing to do anything , but the only trouble is i cannot afford to be driving many hundreds of kms every day

I will put my hand to anything , outside work, driving, shoveling !"#¤% if needs must

have you had a look at http://www.mol.fi/paikat ?
there's even an english-speaking job advertised (forest worker) if you're comfortable with wielding an axe..!

check out the list for tammisaari here

You could also go to the unemployment office and ask about training possibilities (I'm assuming that your status here is "permanently domiciled"?)

Have you tried the port in Hanko? The farmer I know in Pohja works as a driver in the port during the winter. You probably need an HGV licence but if driving is what you are good at, it might be worth getting one. Maybe your local employment office would help you find out more about getting on an HGV course.

Why didn't you/or don't you, go there in person? My Finnish isn't great either, and therefore I avoid phoning Finnish people (for offical related things anyway). Its much better to go there in person I think. Even if you're job hunting in your own country, the employers will get to put a face to the name, hopefully show that you're a normal type person, etc etc. Its just much better overall. Prepare a CV written in Finnish and have someone Finnish check it over, and just say 'I'm looking for work, can I just drop off my CV....' etc etc. They might throw it in the trash, they might not you never know.

Put it another way -- if you're a an employer, are you going to give a job to someone who speaks poor Finnish on the phone, etc etc -- you're not are you? You are most likely going to think that they're some weirdo (no offence meant). They're just going to think 'get off the phone and stop wasting my time' type thing aren't they? But then again, what do I know.

Or again, try the job websites and use your unemployment office.

Not quite sure, but I thought Ekenäs was a mainly Swedish speaking community?
We got married there and I've spoken Swedish to pretty much everyone we dealt with "in town".

Well you didnt say what are your qualifications even you did say that you are willing to do anything..that is good..
Since you are in farm country, you can approach some local farmers to see if you can operate tractors during the winters to clear snow..
Also, if you know how to take care of the animals ( cows, milking etc etc) so the desperate farmers can take a Holiday.. So this is an unique opportunity..for you.
Another is to see if you are eligible to do some civil work at the army, but I really doubt that you ll qualify..
Have you approached the Tammisaari hospital to see if they need some part time cleaners etc.. They always need people ..as long as you dont speak and do the cleaning..you should be OK..

Rural towns often have a replacement/help system for farmers (in case of illness/maternity leave etc.). You could ask the local administration. My daughter did this during weekends and holidays.

Now this scares me.

When i have a hard time working as an au-pair or the money isn't enough, etc., etc., i often think that after this contract i will speak basic Finnsih and i will find a "real" job with a "real" payment.. I will have a flat (maybe shared), but i will be independent, earning my own money.

But when i read this... 7 years... ffs!

The future is bright... not! :?
