thanks for the tips; saw the guillotine and the electronic repellent in k-rauta too, but chose the update of the traditional model in the end ("supercat"), which promises "100% guarantee" on the package, 2 traps for 6 euro. Works very effectively, with an integrated bait, this morning the poor mouse lay in the pantry with a broken neck.

The bucket solution is the best.

Although, i would advise on using a tall metal bucket, with straight edges - a big paint bucket would do.
Put some cheese, or some grain in it, and then pick the mice in the morning.

Discovered this by mistake - at home, i used to bring grain from the large storage in a metal paint bucket (cleaned, of course), so that my grandmother could feed the chickens without having to go to the attic to bring grain.

Anyway, granny left the cover off one bucket one night. Next morning, there were 3 mice inside.
This is actually how i managed to teach one of my kittens that mice are comestible. Placed the kitten inside, left, and returned after 20 minutes.

Nah, that was back in Romania.

Here in Helsinki i didn't find any mice yet, i don't have any large paint buckets lying around, and no kittens to entice me to hunt for them :)

Oh, then you have nothing to wrap in the cabbage leaf. Too bad... theres mice and voles at my cottage, but it seems the neighbours cats and the owls keep them at bay. Last year had a problem with rats, they were quite fast in multiplying.

Had same problem with rats back in Romania a year ago.
That is, until i installed a new "security system" - 3 overly hyper-active kittens.

After around a month, there were no mice or rats left, and the cats started hunting mice from some of the neighbors that also had large yards with barns in them.
And also birds, caught by staying very still in trees, between the leaves, and attacking anything that moved around... I still remembered a morning when i woke up and found the summer kitchen full of feathers. Which i had to clean of course, while the kittens were lying around very proud of themselves.
