Community orchestras in Finland?

Hey-
New to this forum.. and I have a question!
I was curious if anyone knew (or knows someone who they can ask to answer the question) if there are any community/civic orchestras that "normal" people can play in (particularly in the Tampere area). In the Detroit area, for instance, there are at least 10 community orchestas that I know of, where "non professional players" can keep up with their playing.
The reason I ask is because I've been playing violin for 20+ years, and am going nuts not having an outlet for playing around here while doing my masters.
If no one knows of anything, are there any competant musicians (would need a violist, another violinist, and a cellist) who would want to form a string quartet? -dan

Great idea - I don't know but Sibelius and Pop Jazz might be good places to phone and ask. With so many great classical players and good schools you would think there must be community orchestras around...

That's an idea... anyone know of any community orchestras particularly in the Tampere area though? I've asked several violinists in Helsinki and pretty much get no response, indicating to me that it might be a dead end in this country.
...You would think that there would be some sort of community orchestras, since I'm sure there's non-professional instrumentalists who study privately, and want to do something with their skills...

Also Tampere´s Conservatory has a chamber music orchestra.

These are common in Finland, unfortunately I am not familiar with the Tampere region. However, I did a quick search and here are some numbers to try to get more information.

Ahjola, an Adult Education Centre in Tampere, offers a variety of courses in music and they have come groups.

Also, the Pirkanmaa Polytechnic, University of Applied Sciences (Ammattikorkeakoulu), School of Music is specialised in music education and is located in the centre of Tampere in the same facilities with Tampere Conservatoire. There is an international coordinator, Ms. Minna Kulmala, telephone to the student's office 03-245 2529.

You might find some leads in this post. If I were you, I’d contact Pirkanmaan musiikkiopisto and ask whether they had any suggestions. (Juhani Tepponen seems like the right person to ask about it since he is conducting the symphony orchestra rehearsals. The above-mentioned website does not give his direct contact details but you can probably get them by calling their office or by sending them some email.)

I would think most universities have orchestras. Tampere University has at least this one: http://www.taso.fi/ but I'm sure they have some other types of orchestras, too.
