Are YLE going to stop Swedish Language service?

Conan is on commercial channel SubTV in Finland. I was talking about services like YLE's English news services provided on TV, radio and the internetz. While they are admittedly minimal, they do require staffing and money.

I thought you were talking about commercial channels like mtv3, subtv, nelonen, etc.

YLE’s English news in web are available here.

Their English language tv news (“YLE News”) are broadcast at the end of every Aamu-tv show (Mon-Fri), at about 9:09 AM. Those segments are also viewable on the web, in here.

As for their English language radio services, see YLE Mondo.

YLE Mondo costs nothing. They just retransmit BBC, NPR, ABC, RFI etc. They used to have a few "local" programmes in English but scrapped those a few years ago. Twice a day they broadcast a five minute news programme in English. No big deal if that goes off the air, IMO.

They also do a morning newscast on AamuTV, not much, but they do it.
Also do between three to five news items per day on the www (many people here link to their content when discussing current events).

There is a more active Russian branch of the same department at YLE. What we now call Mondo fmrly Capital FM was originally created for Russian language content.

I would be sad to see any of it go.

Except for Radio Australia and Radio España. I can never tell what they're on about.

Shame Finland didnt have a Bjørge Lillelien when Finland beat Sweden at something

Um, the official languages are Finnish and Swedish. Not English, not Swahili, not even Sami, another "native" language here. I don't understand why YLE should fund more English broadcasts. There is plenty of English TV anyway. If that is your argument, then the Russians that live here (percentage wise) also have an argument for broadcasts in Russian funded by YLE. Let's not open that can of worms. I think it's fair to stick to official languages.

I personally wouldn't want Swedish TV scrapped, but I really have no say, as I actually don't watch TV, have a digibox, or get any channels at this point. Haven't turned the thing on and watched anything for past year. Been too busy or watch or read news on internet. But the principal is that it represents part of the Finnish population, and I hate to think of the old grannies in Töölö not being able to watch their knitting programs anymore.
