BMW850 is a sports car, and thus holds a higher risk for accidents. That's the reason insurance companies come up with to increase the premium for the car.
When I imported my Honda Prelude the same thing happened to me. I had a clean slate, no accidents whatsoever, a 70% bonus in Holland and 700 euros insurance premium per year (traffic and car insurance). Here I paid 1200 euros (traffic and car insurance) with a pathetic 30% bonus, even if I brought a signed proof from my insurance company in Holland.
It's just how it is. You can't really compare Germany with Finland anyway. There are many things car related there that are so totally out of this world compared with Finland (car prices, speed limits, insurance prices, etc. etc. etc.).

Big luxus car = big luxus insurance.

My insurance for a 1987 Kadett is about 500 a year.

This is the mandatory insurance or is it price of package?

Can't remember prices of my own insurance no matter how hard I try...

If it is mandatory only you might, just a suggestion, want to consider getting kasko on top of what you have to take.

Can't believe anyone would want to have the 'car speed' system as in Germany. The way of driving is totally insane - idiots 10 cm from your bumper at 170 km/hr etc.

Finland has only in the last years started to drive in a somewhat 'civilized' manner - there is no problem with highway regulations here - just that there still are too many that don't come close to obeying them

There are idiots in every country, also in Finland.
Today I was pulling up onto ring I from the traffic lights in Konala. There was only a bit of ramp left. The "idiot" behind me in his 3rd hand Audi thought he was a big boy and wanted to get in front of me still so he gassed up and almost chipped off my front bumper. I doubt if there was still 10 cms left in between. So...
It's very easy to generalize and it's difficult to say what's going on without seeing the situation.
Sure, if you keep on driving 120 or 130 on the most left lane (out of 3 or 4), then it's obvious you get someone on your tail, since you have no business on that lane with that speed, especially not in Germany.

My 'message' was that - yes- there are idiots in every country but Germany - permtting 'whatver' speed on the bahns - is basically training ALL drivers to play Mr or Ms Macho - and try to force someone off the road

Finland is still full of the "I gotta be first" types - but Germany even makes it legal! Thanks - but we don't need it!

(There were days - years ago - on the 2-lane roads where MANY Finnish drivers would just go out and pass using the middle of the road - and force oncoming traffic off to the shoulder direction so they would fit in the '3rd' center lane - one rarely sees that these days, fortunately)

harrymalmberg, I totally disagree with you.

> Can't believe anyone would want to have the 'car speed' system as in Germany.

I see nothing wrong with it at all. Traffic laws should concentrate on safety, not speed.

> The way of driving is totally insane - idiots 10 cm from your bumper at 170 km/hr etc.

Ignoring your gross exageration, the problem is the 10 cm not the 170 km/hr.

> Germany - permtting 'whatver' speed on the bahns - is basically training ALL drivers to play Mr or Ms Macho - and try to force someone off the road.

Rubbish. Germany does not train anyone to try and force people off the road. All drivers should drive safely and the absence of a speed limit does not alter that.

Usually that's true.

I disagree. The left-most lane is the over-taking lane, not the fast lane. If someone is in the left-most lane doing 120 and overtaking slower traffic in the other lanes, they are doing nothing wrong. When traffic volumes build, speeds have to drop.

Well when the car is driven by the jerk German driver it is the 10 cm that becomes the RELEVANCE - sometimes it slips back to 15 cm

Maybe you should get off your beloved bahn and try some normal 2 lane roads - particularly in winding, hilly country - and then contend with one of thes clowns literally trained with the "ME POWERFUL, YOU SLOW - here I come" - You yourself of course driving at the proper speed - whatever it is.

Sorry - but Germany is alone on this - mainly because of industrial lobbying - it will be changed.

And one reason it will change will have nothing to do with safety and driving enjoyment for the non-crazies - the reduction of speed results in tremendous savings in fuel - as well as dramatic lowering of CO2 emission - the dreaded 'heavy carbon footprint'

By the way - when some car is 'out in that left lane' (surely doing some reasonable speed anyhow) - is it the way to get them to the right - to crawl RIGHT UP on their bumper flashing lights, blowing horns, etc,?? - that is not only dangerous - but also shows the rear driver to be a mental case

The way to do it is stay back the correct distance and flash lights every once in a while - it works for me - I may have to 'suffer' and only go at 100-110 for awhile - but so what?

I surely have no right to throw a temper tantrum at those speeds and endanger many cars around me.

And since there will ALWAYS be people out in those lanes - whatever the speed or non-speed limits - people have to also act rationally and reasonably - and not pretend to be a Tiger Tank!! Just cool it!

Oh, just go to Estonia for a road trip and you see this. The thing is the trucks are the worst. I got a picture I snapped on a two-lane of a two trucks dragracing on a few kilometre strip, one trying to get past the other. I was doing something like 100, it was a 90 limit, and the trucks were in the horizon, side by side...
