Dealing with Finnish Winters

And the comments about the sauna I hadn't heard before, didn't think it would help much with this but I wil try it.[/quote]
I'd never had a sauna before coming here and couldn't really see the point in setting a room on fire then sitting in it, but I must admit it's great. It strangely reminded me of Australia, somewhere warm you drink beer... I spoke to my father in Melbourne last weekend and he asked about the weather here. I said there was snow on the ground, the lake was starting to freeze and I'd driven on snow for the first time. He said "That sounds fun, it's 34 degrees here."Bastard.

Hi Fain and i just want to say good luck with coping with the darkness. I've had trouble too and i know that my Finnish friends also struggle - they say that they never get used to it.
So some things that have helped me:
Ice swimming every second day
A "happy" lamp - 30 mins a day in the morning
Watch some funny movies
Take some good quality vitamins and try to eat more fruit and veggies
Getting outside and walking around at least once a day
Lighting candles & making my "cave" look good
Chatting with friends on the phone
Making myself get up at the same time every day (this is tough!)
Having a couple of saunas a week
Really hope this helps! Let us know ...

This is my 11th consecutive winter here and the darkness this winter has not bothered me at all. It did at first. One possible reason is that we have installed some halogen lighting in our townhouse which may have some effect like the "happy lamp". Also our cottage is extensively fitted with halogens and it does have a different effect than your standard lighting.
