mobile phone contract issues.....

Post by mikeyh » Sun Dec 02, 2007 6:20 pm

Hyva iltaa,

Just a quick question regarding mobile phone contracts and the policies set out by the service providers.
Do Finnish sp´s `lock`thier phones to their own network therefore not allowing the use of other sim cards? This is standard practice in the Uk and was hoping that it is not the case here in suomi.

Kiitos paljon! :)

Oh by Jove, my dear I have understood it a standard practice in the UK also to drive on the wrong side of the road and have carpetted bogs...

Yeah, so it is... was illegal to tie phones to operators here - so what you generally do is buy a phone and then you get yourself a sim-card. Unless you get one of these newfangled 3G phones where the operator lock is allowed.

Which in your case you probably need to get a prepaid as the operators don't trust just off the boat people with a contract unless they shell in a hefty deposit, so it wouldn't be anything "cheap".

You'll know by trying ;) But you still buy a regular phone separate from the contract. The 3G's then again are operator-locked usually, but you can get those without the contract too.

you can always get it unlocked - but that kind of service doesn't really exist in finland. but if you look at the prices then after two years minimum contract you've paid the whole cost of the phone back (and then some!). Like someone else said this only applies to 3g phones anyway (since the government allowed phones tied to contracts a few years ago when finland fell far behind the rest of the world with regards to camera phones and colour screens).

afaik there are no prepaid phones on a discount - no chance to buy a razr for 80 euro and unlock it for another 20 like I did in uk .. thank you vodafone !
